What happens when we die is a question that passes most people’s lips. It’s a curiosity that comes as we have no idea what is beyond the everyday objects that we can see and hear in the world around us. So, researchers have studied this question – speaking and studying people who have had something known as a near death experience (NDE) to understand more about what people see when they die. And of course, there are their own testimonies. In one case, Deborah Prum has had two experiences, and this is what she saw (Picture: Tales Of Resilience/ Youtube)

Deborah explains her first NDE happened after she went into early labour with her first child. She was four weeks early, and after eating some Chinese food, she went into labour. When she got to the hospital, she was in an emergency situation immediately. Her blood pressure was high, and her liver was not ‘working’. Being surrounded with emergency staff she knew quite well, Deborah explains on the channel Tales of Resilience on YouTube that: ‘All of a sudden the essence of my being was in the corner of a room, looking down at everything.’ At the time, Deborah said she felt ‘totally dispassionate, just observing the situation, and then…nothing’ (Picture: Deborah Prum/ Facebook)

Deborah recalls her colleagues telling her that she was close to dying and she was so sick she was put into a three day coma, where she came to. For those wondering, Deborah says her son was born – but he was sick and just the size of her palm. She was told that he probably would have cognitive disabilities and physical disabilities. But she was not worried about that, and it turns out that he was valedictorian and prom king – so he ‘turned out ok’. But about her NDE, she did not tell anyone about her out of body experience, apart from her husband, Bruce, – which is one of the main hallmarks of an NDE, since she ‘did not know what to make out of it… and it did not affect me in any way but I did squeeze the life out of everyday’ (Picture: Tales Of Resilience/ Youtube)

Then Deborah had another one. Her second NDE came over 10 years later, on Valentine’s Day. She and her husband were out to meet some friends, and since it was so cold, she also put on her mother’s thick coat. And as she approached an intersection, she saw big green light, which she called ‘crystal clear and green’ but as they were approaching the intersection, and she saw lights coming towards her and her husband. She says: ‘The next thing I know, I’m in this yellow space. It’s like I’ve been dropped in a vat of yellow pudding, not in a bad way. I’m compl;etley surrounded by this yellow glow. But I did not feel an attachment to myself, and I felt this most profound peace and almost like a quiet joy – not like a happiness bouncy joy but I felt a peace and I felt more at home in that space than I’ve ever felt’  (Picture: Deborah Prum/ Facebook)

She continued: ‘It felt timeless. I couldn’t tell you that I was there a minute, or a century. And at a certain stage, I began hearing something which was like my husband’s frantic voice. He later told me that I was out for something like three or four minutes, and I felt so guilty about this but I did not want to come back. I mean, I didn’t know where I was but I didn’t want to come back. Deborah explains in a Huffpost article she wrote that hearing her husband’s voice ‘made her annoyed as she wanted to stay put’. In the YouTube interview, she added: ‘I reluctantly came back and I came back to this crazy scene of my husband’s glasses breaking, blood coming down his face, and he was pale and frantic. And in front of me, there was like this mist, everything was topsy turvey and there was a shadow of a man who I later learnt was the driver of the other car’  (Picture: Deborah Prum/ Facebook)

Deborah added: ‘And the next thing I know this man opens our door. He had curly hair and he looked like he just stepped out of an office and he said something like “I’m not going to move you because something might be broken” but he unbuckled my belt in case the car caught on fire and he held my hand.’ She later learnt the man who drove into them was an unlicensed driver, and it took her seven months to heal from the incident. However, when she later mentioned the man to Bruce, he said he did not see any man. At the time of her NDE, she did not feel any pain but just utter peace that is still a feeling she says she yearned for. ‘I don’t know what to make out of the experience, expect from the fact that I am absolutely confident that it had happened but I felt assured or reassured’  (Picture: Deborah Prum/ Facebook)

She continues: ‘One of my biggest fears in life is that I’ll die alone or I’ll be abandoned or whatever, but this experience took the edge off this fear.’ She says that she no longer has fears around death and feels like she does not need to know what happens after death – and this was another experience she did not mention to anyone but Bruce. In her Huffpost article, she wrote: ‘These days, I’m less religious but more spiritual…My NDEs brought the finiteness of life into sharp focus. I rarely procrastinate because I am never completely convinced that I will be given the gift of another tomorrow. Although that outlook may seem gloomy, it’s not. That conviction has caused me to pursue my passions, to learn how to paint portraits, figure out how to play my mandolin up and down the neck, and to save up and buy a 22-year-old pickup truck so I can transport my bike and kayak more easily on adventures’ (Picture: Deborah Prum/ Facebook)
