Canonical just officially announced the release of Ubuntu 25.10 as the newest non-LTS release of Ubuntu Linux.
Ubuntu 25.10 “Questing Quokka” is powered by the very new Linux 6.17 kernel, features the GNOME 49 desktop by default, features the GCC 15 compiler toolchain, and brings a variety of other updates such as Python 3.13.7, OpenJDK Java 25, Rust 1.85, and a plethora of other updates.
Along with the GNOME 49 upgrades, Ubuntu 25.10 has switched to using the Loupe image viewer by default and Ptyxis as its default terminal emulator on the Ubuntu desktop.
Ubuntu 25.10 is also notable for beginning to use Rust system tools like sudo-rs, Rust Coreutils, and more. Ubuntu 25.10 also on the RISC-V side now mandates RVA23 profile support but for now that basically means Ubuntu 25.10 RISC-V is back to supporting the QEMU emulator with a lack of RVA23 hardware readily available yet.
