Tesla recently exhibited Optimushis android doped with artificial intelligence, at the premiere of Tron : Ares for a little kung-fu demonstration in front of the actor Jared Letoshortly after an impressive training session that left one wondering about his potential.

In a short sequence, shared on the robot’s X account (Twitter), we were able to see Optimus chain together some rather well-coordinated movements, apparently addressed to the American star. The singer of Thirty Seconds to Marsand protagonist of the saga Twilight as well as Joachim Rønning’s latest film, however, did not return the favor. He simply posed for a few seconds without much conviction in front of the robot, decorated in the colors of the film for the occasion.

An impressive workout

But this little clip is just the tip of the iceberg. A few days earlier, Elon Musk had shared another much more impressive video of the robot. These images, apparently captured during a session “ learning », put Optimus on stage facing a human partner presented as a kung fu instructor called Master. And the latter was much more involved than Jared Leto.

During this sequence, which even contained a little contact, the robot seemed to react in real time to the movements of its opponent, with some parades, changes of support and sequences rather well executed. He even managed to maintain his balance without difficulty after being (lightly) pushed with both hands by Shifu.

Certainly, the pace was relatively slow, and we can legitimately consider that the sequence was at least partly choreographed. But the precision of the robot’s gestures, its stability and the coordination between its limbs still mark clear progress compared to what Tesla has shown us so far.

For this reason, some Internet users were skeptical, suggesting that the robot was probably piloted by a human operator to ensure the demonstration went smoothly. But Elon Musk reacted by assuring that all the movements had been carried out autonomously by the “brain” doped with machine learning of Optimus. Regardless, this video shows that the different perception and control algorithms that allow the robot to interact with its environment continue to progress.

Tesla’s golden goose?

The whole question is knowing when it will be sufficiently autonomous to carry out the missions for which it was originally designed: work in Tesla factoriesand in the longer term, in the homes of future customers as a versatile servant.

Tesla is betting big on these objectives. For two years, Musk has regularly stated that Optimus will eventually become the company’s primary source of revenue. Last September, he even claimed that the android could represent “80% of the value” of Tesla, and generate more than 10 trillion dollars of income on its own. Although it is obviously appropriate to be cautious about the billionaire’s predictions, the financial stakes are undoubtedly colossal, and it is probably only a matter of time before Tesla launches its first commercial offers.
