ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming made a rare public appearance in Shanghai on October 9 for the opening of the Zhichun Innovation Center, a new private non-profit institution co-founded with Professor Yu Yong, who established Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s ACM program. The center, located in the city’s Xuhui District, aims to recruit young people interested in computer science and artificial intelligence to join as junior research fellows.
In his remarks, Zhang said he has long focused on talent recruitment and development and believes that much potential in young people remains untapped. The center, he said, seeks to cultivate individuals who are curious, resilient, and capable of independent thinking—encouraging long-term focus, practical experience, and the ability to learn through exploration while embracing uncertainty.
