Apple has officially presented its new M5 chip and announced the launch of three new devices, including the 14-inch MacBook Pro laptop, the high-end iPad Pro tablet and the Vision Pro M5 viewer.
Apple continues to develop its own silicon, advancing the successful ‘Silicon’ program launched as a transition to the ARM architecture from Intel’s previous x86. Each generation of its custom chips is a leap forward in integration, efficiency and performance and the new M5 promises to be a new advance, especially in the graphics section and in acceleration of AI functionsa section where the company had been relegated compared to the competition.

Sales of Apple’s headset have been well below expectations. Or rather, below the parameters of the Cupertino firm used to repeating success after success with each product it puts on the market. And it is that It was not easy to achieve massive sales for its approach and Price, in a segment of virtual/augmented/mixed reality that promised to be a revolution and until now (with very few exceptions) has been a complete fiasco. It is true that the CEO himself, Tim Cook, defended its development as “a pioneering product” and even treated him like «experimental» for AR/VR ecosystem testing.
Now comes a renewal that confirms that Apple is going to continue promoting this type of product. In addition to launching the new SoC in main product lines (MacBook Pro and iPad Pro), Apple has included it in its professional display with the aim of revitalizing its sales. In the absence of the development of a second complete version and another low-cost variant for consumption that can extend the ecosystem, the M5 can provide a plus for sales.
The new version of the viewer takes advantage of the performance increase announced for the M5 and improves some other sections. Apple focuses especially on advances in artificial intelligence. Compared to the M2 chip in the original Vision Pro, Apple claims that the new model “makes AI-powered functions run up to 50 percent faster for system experiences, like capturing a Persona or transforming photos into space scenes, and up to two times faster for third-party apps”.
In addition to the new engine, Apple has improved its micro-OLED displays and can now render 10% more pixels. You can also increase the refresh rate to 120Hz when necessary, which should help create the illusion of virtual reality, even when working with virtual displays.
Another improved section responds to criticism of the comfort of use for long periods. And it is that Apple has installed a new headbandspecifically a Dual Knit Band. Apple claims this headband will be more comfortable, with top and bottom straps “woven in 3D”. The bottom strap, in particular, provides a counterweight that should relieve pressure when wearing it.
The Vision Pro M5 is now available for pre-order in markets where it is sold with the same starting price as the original: $3,499. It will be available from October 22.
