Samsung Galaxy XR: Rumored price, release date, specs and latest news

For all of 2025, we’ve been hearing about Project Moohan, the mixed reality headset that Samsung has been building with contributions from Google and Android. But now, with a Samsung launch event looming, we’re finally going to see the headset — reportedly called the Samsung Galaxy XR — in all its glory. And that should answer a few of the big looming questions about the device.

Samsung has shown off early versions of its Project Moohan efforts throughout the year — I even got the chance to try on the headset myself. But the company has been stingy with details about its headset’s specs, the full list of apps that will run on Galaxy XR and just how much this new device is going to cost.

All those details should be revealed this week, though, at a late-night virtual product launch. Here’s what we know about the Samsung Galaxy XR headset and what we’re hoping to find out during the launch event.

What is Samsung going to call its mixed reality headset?

Since first showing off its headset last December, Samsung has referred to the device as Project Moohan. In Korean, “moohan” means “infinity,” which seems to be a reference to the limitless space that the virtual world affords.

Subsequent demos and teasers have never strayed from the Project Moohan name. Even the official announcement of this week’s launch refers to Project Moohan and not some other name.

Still, it’s widely believed that Samsung will officially launch its headset under a different name, and given the visibility of the company’s Galaxy branding, you’d figure that Galaxy will be a part of that naming process. Most reports now refer to Samsung’s headset as the Galaxy XR, and we’ll play along until we hear something different.

Now on to that launch event — it takes place Tuesday (October 21) at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT, with those in the UK having to tune in at 3 a.m. BST on Wednesday to get a look at the Galaxy XR.

If 10 p.m. ET seems pretty late in the evening to host a product launch, keep in mind that it’s 11 a.m. the next morning in Seoul, South Korea. And you’d have to figure that Samsung hopes to sell a lot of headsets in its home country.

The event itself is a virtual one, and you’ll be able to live stream it both on YouTube and from the Samsung Newsroom. We’ll also be hosting a live blog of the event, which Samsung is calling “Worlds Wide Open,” another hint as to the capabilities of the Galaxy XR headset.

How much the Galaxy XR headset will cost is the big question heading into Tuesday’s event. A report out of Korea in August claimed the price will range between $1,800 and $2,900. Even at the higher end of that estimated range, the Galaxy XR would cost less than Apple’s Vision Pro M5, which starts at $3,499.

Samsung Galaxy XR: Design and specs

Thanks to all those Project Moohan appearances, we know what the Galaxy XR headset will look like, and the answer is a lot like the Apple Vision Pro. There’s a ski-mask like visor covering your eyes with a strap that goes around the back of your head. The headset does offer a passthrough mode that lets you see the real world around you through the lenses.

Specific details about the Galaxy XR are harder to come by. Samsung hasn’t disclosed how much the headset weighs, for example, though it felt light-weight enough when I wore an early version back in May. An Android Headlines report based on leaked specs puts the weight of the Galaxy XR at 18.2 ounces, in line with the 17.6-ounce weight of the Meta Quest 3 headset.

During the initial Project Moohan announcement, Qualcomm said its Snapdragon XR Plus Gen 2 chipset would power the device. That means support for up to 4.3K resolution in each eye, running at 90 frames per second. Hand, eye and voice tracking sensors allow you to operate the Galaxy XR, according to reports, though apparently the device will also feature controllers. In my headset demo, I used gestures to navigate menus and operate apps.

Based on leaked specs, the Galaxy XR features a 4K micro-OLED panel delivering 4,032 pixels per inch. Graphics certainly looked sharp on the display when I tested Project Moohan back in May.

Samsung Galaxy XR: Features

Expect Samsung to spend a lot of time at Tuesday’s event highlighting use cases for its Galaxy XR headset. Based on my very limited time with Project Moohan, I would imagine we’re going to see a lot of familiar apps optimized for Google’s Android XR software platform that runs on the headset.

In my demo, the headset’s virtual mode featured floating panels for different apps — I tried out Google offerings like Maps, YouTube and Photos, with experiences tailored to a virtual environment. YouTube allowed me to watch 3D movies while Photos showed off spatial images with more depth than the flat 2D images you see on other devices.

A Reddit user spotted a section of Google’s Play Store that highlighted “immersive experiences made for your XR headset” and included an image of a headset that looks a lot like the Project Moohan devices that have appeared in public. Featured apps include games, video streaming apps and virtual desktop tools.

Samsung Galaxy XR: How it compares to other headsets

Given the similar looks, Samsung’s Galaxy XR headset will surely invite comparisons to Apple’s Vision Pro, especially with Apple recently announcing a new M5-powered version of its headset. Based on what we’ve seen so far from Samsung’s headset, a lot of the same experiences you can enjoy on Vision Pro will be part of the Galaxy XR story, with Samsung reportedly undercutting Apple on price.

Meta’s headset lineup also figure to compete against the Galaxy XR, especially if Samsung’s new device ends up costing a lot more than the $499 Meta Quest 3. Meta discontinued its more premium Meta Quest Pro at the start of this year.

Samsung Galaxy XR: Outlook

Tuesday’s launch event gives Samsung the opportunity to fill in a lot of blanks surrounding its XR headset, from key specs to the price of the device. But the biggest news will be how Samsung positions its headset and details what exactly you can do with the Galaxy XR.
