We’ve all blamed autocorrect for saying ’ducking’ rather than a certain other word – but now we might have a new excuse.

Michi NekoMichi, a YouTuber who tests out technology, has discovered a ‘bug’ with the iPhone keyboard that causes the wrong letter to be typed.

‘If you’re making more typos in iOS lately, you’re not going crazy,’ he said in an X post on Monday.

‘It’s a bug in iOS that causes the keyboard to randomly insert the wrong letter instead of what you typed.’

The video slowed down to one-quarter of the speed shows Michi typing ‘thumbs up’ on the Apple Notes app, only for ‘thjmbs up’ to appear.

The clip showed how Michi tapped the ‘u’ key only for the app to insert ‘j’ instead on his iPhone, which runs the most current iOS 26 software.

Michi said the issue is nothing new – he’s seen it as far back as iOS 16, which was rolled out in 2022, and on iOS 18, which ended last month.

‘Previously, I just assumed it was me hitting the wrong keys, though, it wasn’t until I recorded it today and looked in slow motion that I noticed what was happening,’ Michi added.

Followers said they have been struggling with the hiccuping keyboard for ‘years’, pointing to how the issue has been raised several times on X, Reddit and community forums.

I don’t know how to explain this, but the iOS keyboard has gotten considerably worse for some reason.Nothing seems to have changed, but I’ve been having so many typos over the past year. It’s nearly impossible to type a single sentence without a typo.

Ben Hylak said: ‘I actually thought I was losing my mind.’

Glen Bardley added: ‘Thank you. I was starting to worry that I had some kind of shaking hands disease that I couldn’t perceive except through horrible typos on my phone. This makes me feel much better.’

Some wondered whether the muddled typing was down to autocorrect or the iPhone’s swipe-to-type feature, though Michi clarified he doesn’t use it.

‘If I used slide-to-type, iOS would automatically add spaces before the slide-word,’ he said.

‘But here you can see it doesn’t treat it as a new word and does it in the middle of an existing word.’

One person on the MacRumors forum said earlier this year that since switching off autocorrect, they haven’t noticed as many typos.

Though others said that even after toggling the feature off, the keyboard inputted incorrect characters, hinting that the issue lies deep within the iPhone’s software.

‘I came from BlackBerry 10 on a red developer edition Z10. I almost never made mistakes on the on screen keyboard,’ a user said.

‘I moved to iPhone on the iPhone 6s and have used it ever since.’

On a recent Reddit thread, iPhone owners said they have also tried switching screen protectors, typing in different languages and upgrading their phones – yet the keyboard still bugs out.

‘The iPhone typing and autocorrect have been badly broken for years,’ a user added. ‘It seems to get worse with each release.’
