Spider-Man took Sony Pictures Animation into another dimension. From New Generation in 2018, the studio is multiplying its feats on both the small and big screens. While the return of Miles Morales is long overdue, it is KPop Demon Hunters which reached new heights on Netflix this summer. In just a few weeks, it became the most viewed film in the history of Red N. A success which obviously caused the popularity of the Sony subsidiary to skyrocket, probably to the point of accelerating the development process of other projects. According to Variety, The Mitchells against the machines will be entitled to a sequel.
Released in 2021, The Mitchells Against the Machines followed an ordinary family as the eldest prepares to enter college. To celebrate this important moment, the patriarch decides to organize a road trip to the school. But it will quickly turn sour whena technological rebellion makes any electronic device a formidable enemy. With the help of two dysfunctional robots, the Mitchells will have to learn to collaborate and overcome their relationship problems to get out and save the world. Offered directly on Netflix, the thread by Michael Rianda and Jeff Rowe won over critics and spectators. Its sequel will nevertheless be made without its thinking heads.
Big change
If the voice cast remains a mystery for the moment, in French as in the original language, we already know that the two original directors will not be back. Don’t panic, however, the task was not entrusted to just anyone, since Guillermo Martinez and JP Sans are in charge. The first was story director on the first film, while the second co-directed the excellent The Bad Guys 2 this summer. They both have some experience in the field. Note that the producers of the saga Spider-Man into the Spiderverse are also involved, as is Michael Rianda who acts as executive producer.
Currently, no release date has been announced. We can imagine that this sequel is progressing more quickly now than the success of KPop Demon Hunters put the spotlight back on Sony Animation. In any case, and even if The Mitchells against the machines was promised a theatrical release in 2020the partnership between Sony and Netflix ensures exploitation via the platform’s catalog for this suite.
