iPhone 18 leak signals huge RAM boost

It looks like Apple’s gearing up for a serious memory boost with the iPhone 18.

If the latest leak pans out, every model in the lineup will get 12GB of RAM, marking the first time Apple has put the same amount of memory in all four versions.

This information comes from The Bell in South Korea (via MacRumors), and the report suggests Apple has asked Samsung, its primary RAM supplier, to increase module production before the 2026 manufacturing cycle.

For regular iPhones, that would mean an increase of about 50%. This increase is likely meant to support the additional Apple intelligence features that could be added.

The move makes total sense, since Apple Intelligence is becoming a bigger part of both iOS and macOS. More memory translates to improved performance, from Siri’s upgraded capabilities to real-time phone summarisation.

The current iPhone 17 only has 8 GB and lags behind the 12 GB RAM of the iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone Air.

Even with this refresh, Apple is still behind some of the best Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S25, which already comes with 12GB of RAM as standard. But Apple has always relied on tight hardware and software integration to compete head-to-head, despite smaller specifications on paper.

Over the years, Apple has been slow and steady with RAM upgrades, and this time is no different. From 6GB in the iPhone 15, 8GB in the 16 lineup, and now, possibly 12GB across the board for the 18. Giving all models the same RAM could shake up how Apple differentiates the base and Pro versions next time around.

Rumours around the iPhone 18 don’t stop there: it’s also expected to include better 5G satellite connectivity, plus a camera overhaul on the Pro models. However, the phone might not see a release until 2027.

The iPhone Air is Apple’s most interesting, fun and likely divisive phone in a decade. It’s surprisingly durable, designed with such flair that it feels wonderful to pick up and does what it sets out to do very well. But, there are sacrifices here – and for some, they will simply be too much.

  • Sublime looks and feel

  • Lovely ProMoton screen

  • Great camera

  • Excellent performance

  • Battery life can’t quite match the Plus phones

  • Single camera lacks versatility

  • A hard sell for some when the iPhone 17 is so much cheaper
