The UK’s regulatory action against Big Tech monopolies will not achieve real change without coordination with international partners, according to a leading competition law attorney.
Speaking to UKTN, Gene Burrus, global policy council for the Coalition for App Fairness (CAF), discussed the progress from UK regulators in encouraging more competitive behaviour from tech giants.
CAF is one of a handful of groups advocating for fairer practices towards software developers from Apple and Google, which together dominate the international app store market.
The organisation provided evidence to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that helped lead to the regulator’s decision last week to designate Apple and Google as having Strategic Market Status (SMS) in the app store industry.
Burrus applauded the decision from the CMA, however, warned that this was just “step one” in the long process of achieving fairer terms for app developers, a process which he believes the tech giants will fight every step of the way….
