Nintendo has announced that it will shift its focus away from the original Nintendo Switch and instead focus on its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2. If you are one of the people who have not upgraded to the Nintendo Switch 2 yet, now’s the time to probably start saving up for it.
In the latest financial results briefing from Nintendo, it was announced that the company will shift its primary development focus more towards the Nintendo Switch 2, and plans to expand its business around this new platform.
But don’t panic if you’re still rocking the original Switch; this doesn’t mean Nintendo will retire the Nintendo Switch immediately. However, it is a step in that direction. This means we probably will start seeing fewer game releases for the original Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch has built a massive fan base since its release, thanks to its flexibility and wide variety of games offered. So when the Nintendo Switch 2 was released, a good number of people opted to upgrade.
As of right now, over 10.36 million Nintendo Switch 2 consoles have been sold since it was launched in June, with around 84% of the purchases being from people looking to upgrade from the original Nintendo Switch.
Sure, it’s a small slice compared to the original Nintendo Switch’s whopping 154.01 million lifetime sales, but there is a clear shift to the new platform, hence Nintendo’s decision to double down and focus more on the successor, the Nintendo Switch 2.
For now, though, Nintendo will still continue to sell the hardware for the Nintendo Switch, stating that it will be taking consumer demand and the business environment into consideration. It also mentioned that some big Nintendo Switch titles are still coming out this year, from October onwards.
