This is the news that is pleasing at the start of the week. Since Tuesday, November 18, all French policyholders have the possibility of dematerializing their Vitale card on their mobile. This development was already accessible in some departments, in particular thanks to a procedure integrated into the official Carte Vitale application since last June. The device was also accessible via the France identity application, but the latter is no longer mandatory to benefit from it. A decisive turning point for digital administrative simplification.
How to download your Vitale e-card?
Good news, everyone can benefit from it. No need to go through France Identity, you just need to download the Vitale card application from your application store, and start the procedure. The latter will ask you if you want to link your Vitale card to your France Identity app, all you have to do is answer no. Instead, a six-digit code will be sent to you by email, and you will need to scan a valid ID (ID card or passport) as well as your face for facial recognition. Your Social Security number will also be requested.

Where to use it?
This step is part of a broader logic of modernization of the management of social rights in France, aiming to facilitate procedures while ensuring the protection of sensitive information of policyholders. On paper therefore, the Vitale e-card can replace its physical counterpart in a pharmacy or with a healthcare professional. However, the success of the system depends above all on the support of the latter, who will have to accept and integrate this new form of identification into their daily lives. On the Android page of the application, the developers are realistic: “Health professionals are gradually equipping themselves to be able to read the Vitale card app, we invite you to keep your physical Vitale card until everyone is equipped to read it”.
Towards a 100% dematerialized card?
Despite the announced benefits, the digital Vitale card is not close to replacing the classic card.
