My favourite subscription-free smart ring is down to a new Black Friday low

Smart rings like the Oura Ring 4 are a great alternative to full-blown smartwatches, especially if you mainly care about fitness tracking and not access to apps on your wrist. It’s much more discreet, more comfortable and depending on the ring you go for, it lasts a lot longer than a smartwatch too.

The problem with the Oura Ring 4 is that, despite its £349/$349 RRP, you’ll also have to pay a £5.99/$5.99 per month subscription to access all apps and features. Not the Ultrahuman Ring Air though; this subscription-free Oura competitor offers a top-notch experience, and with a Black Friday discount, it’s an easy recommendation for me.

For a limited time, you can pick up the Ultrahuman Ring Air from Amazon for just £246 – a 25% saving compared to its regular £329 RRP, and it’s available in the gold, black, grey, titanium and silver colourways, so you can choose the one that suits your style best.

The Ultrahuman Ring Air is the perfect remedy to the Oura Ring 4’s subscription, and with a Black Friday saving, there’s no better time to invest.

And despite the subscription-free nature of the ring, it continues to evolve with new powerplugs – essentially mini apps that expand functionality – appearing in the Ultrahuman app all the time. It really is the perfect remedy to Oura’s subscription-based system, and you’ll be getting a pretty top-notch experience too.

The Ultrahuman Ring Air is a great alternative to a full-blown smartwatch for those who want something more understated without compromising on their health and fitness data. It’s not perfect, lacking features like automatic workout detection, but it’s a very good early attempt at this emerging form factor.

  • Lightweight, understated design

  • Great health and fitness tracking

  • Consistent 4-day battery life

  • No automatic workout detection

  • Features can differ between iOS & Android apps

  • Takes a while to charge

The Ultrahuman Ring Air is pitched as a stealthy smartwatch alternative, and it largely delivers. You get a slim, lightweight ring that looks more like jewellery than tech – especially in its matte black finish – and at just 2.4g, it’s comfortable enough to forget you’re wearing it.

Despite the tiny form factor, it’s absolutely packed with health smarts. You get all-day heart rate tracking, movement and step data, in-depth sleep analysis, recovery scores, and with a range of first- and third-party Powerplugs, you can track elements like Vitamin D intake and social jetlag.

Sleep tracking in particular plays to the ring’s strengths, with a detailed breakdown of sleep stages, HRV, temperature and more, wrapped up in clear scores that you can understand at a glance. And, with up to four days of battery life, it’s not something you need to constantly charge either.

All of this is tied together by the Ultrahuman app for iOS and Android, which offers a clean, data-rich dashboard with graphs, trends and historical comparisons across days, weeks and months – and it just looks great too.

If you’ve been looking for a subtle, fashion-friendly and genuinely powerful fitness tracker that won’t saddle you with yet another monthly fee, the Ultrahuman Ring Air is a very compelling price – especially now that it’s significantly cheaper than the Oura competition.
