Major mobile provider reveals Brits being ‘gifted’ speed 5G+ in 20 locations

A MAJOR mobile provider is dishing out a massive speed boost to phone owners in 20 locations across the UK.

The network is “gifting 5G+ access” to customers – promising a massive “boost” to their phone signal before Christmas.

This new upgrade is being handed out to EE customers who live in the areas on the list, parent company BT said.

BT says that as many as 1.6 million people live in the areas, and “half a million” of those are EE customers.

EE calls 5G+ the company’s “most advanced and reliable network tech”.

And it’s available to anyone with an EE pay-monthly handset plan, or the Full Works or All Round SIM-only plans.

5G+ serves up stronger and more reliable phone signal.

EE is using it to especially target busy places like high streets and city centres.

And it should give you improved download and upload speeds, which helps with things like video calling, live-streaming, or using social media while out and about.

“This time of year is all about connecting with the people and things we care about most,” said Greg McCall, BT’s networks boss.

McCall said “millions of people” are travelling to visit family and shopping on high streets at this time of year.

And the boosted connectivity will allow them to stay online with nippy speeds even in busy locations.

Here’s the official list of locations getting EE’s 5G+ upgrade:

  • Ballymena
  • Burton-on-Trent
  • Chelmsford
  • Dewsbury
  • Ellesmere Port
  • Gateshead
  • Greenock
  • Hamilton
  • Hartlepool
  • Hatfield
  • Hereford
  • Londonderry
  • Newark
  • Oldham
  • Rochdale
  • Solihull
  • Stafford
  • Stevenage
  • Tamworth
  • Warwick

These aren’t the first locations to get 5G+, however.

EE says that 5G+ connectivity is now available to 44 million people across the UK.

The company also added that it is serving major cities with Christmas markets using 5G+, including Bath, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, York, Belfast, and London.

And EE has also deployed 5G+ at Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland, which is the UK’s biggest outdoor Christmas market.

It’s an especially busy site that’s expected to attract more than 3 million people over the festive period.

So that makes it a perfect candidate for 5G+, which is especially good at serving specific busy areas – rather than casting a very wide net with average connectivity.

But if you’re using a very old phone then you’ll miss out on the boosted 5G+ connection.

For Apple users, you’ll want an iPhone 15 (that’s a 2023 model) or later.
