TL;DR

  • The Samsung Galaxy XR headset is getting a new “Likeness” feature.
  • It works just like Apple Vision Pro’s Persona, allowing users to create hyper-realistic avatars of themselves to use during video calls.
  • Likeness is rolling out in beta starting today.

In addition to features like PC Connect, which links the Samsung headset to Windows PCs, and Travel Mode, which creates a cinema-like setting or a personalized workspace, Galaxy XR is also getting a feature called “Likeness.”

Google first showcased “Likeness” at the Galaxy XR launch event earlier this year. As the name suggests, “Likeness” creates a realistic digital representation of the user’s face. It even mimics a user’s facial expressions and hand gestures in real-time, and if the feature sounds familiar, that’s because it’s essentially the same as Apple Vision Pro’s Persona experience.

With Likeness, when Galaxy XR users join video calls, participants will see a hyper-realistic avatar of their face, making conversations feel more natural and personal.

A video (see above) Google shared with us shows that users will be able to scan their face to create their Likeness using their phones. The company says Likeness is starting to roll out to the Galaxy XR headset in beta today. Beyond the Samsung device, Likeness is also something other upcoming Android XR glasses and headsets should be able to support.
