Qualcomm buys Ventana Micro Systems to advance RISC-V architecture

Qualcomm has confirmed the purchase of the company specialized in the development of chips with RISC-V architecture Ventana Micro Systems. It is unknown how much it has paid for it, as well as the terms of the operation, which surely aims for the company to advance in the creation of chips based on said architecture.

Ventana Micro Systems is an American company, based in the Californian town of Cupertino, founded in 2018 with the aim of launching high-performance, expandable and secure processors based on RISC-V on the market. Currently, the company is a member of the Board of Directors of RISC-V International, as well as its Technical Steering Committee.

Once the purchase is completed, the Ventana team will become part of Qualcomm, and will be integrated into the RISC-V development teams as well as the custom Oryon CPU. In both cases, with the aim of collaborating in the advancement of Qualcomm chip technology for the expansion of AI in all sectors.

We believe the RISC-V instruction set architecture has the potential to advance the frontier of CPU technology, enabling innovation across products. The acquisition of Ventana Micro Systems marks a critical step in our journey to deliver industry-leading RISC-V-based CPU technology across all products.«.

Balaji Baktha, CEO of Ventana Micro Systemscommented for his part that the company is delighted to join «to the Qualcomm team and bring our RISC-V expertise to the development of Qualcomm’s leading Oryon CPU technology. The acquisition by Qualcomm marks an exciting new chapter for our team and we look forward to joining Qualcomm to push the boundaries of energy-efficient high performance for next-generation products and experiences.«.
