There aren’t many viable choices in 2025 if you want a smartphone that isn’t running Android or iOS. However, Jolla’s Sailfish OS platform is one of the few alternatives on the market, and the company just launched the new Jolla Phone.

The phone offers enthusiast features like a microSD card slot, a removable battery, and a notification LED, but the operating system is still the star of the show here. Expect a Google-free mobile platform that’s free of “hidden analytics,” while still supporting Android apps. I wondered whether Android Authority readers would be open to buying a Sailfish OS phone, so here’s what you told us.

Over 2,300 votes were counted as of writing, and ~54% of surveyed readers said they wanted to try a Sailfish OS phone like the Jolla Phone before buying it. That’s a very encouraging result for phone makers with alternative operating systems.

Meanwhile, ~32% of respondents said they would “absolutely” buy a Sailfish OS phone. Finally, just ~14% of polled users said they wouldn’t buy a phone running this operating system.

In other words, ~86% of surveyed readers are keen on a Sailfish OS phone or would like to try one before making a purchase. Again, this suggests that there’s a strong appetite for alternatives to Android and iOS. However, history is littered with failed alternatives to these platforms, such as BlackBerry 10, Windows Phone, and Ubuntu Touch.

Nevertheless, between Sailfish OS, HUAWEI’s HarmonyOS, and Android forks like GrapheneOS, there are a few options available for those who want something different from the current duopoly.
