This December 17, the series Fallout returns to service. Amazon‘s goose that lays the golden eggs today unveiled the first episode of its season 2, widely anticipated by fans of the license. After a successful season 1, Lucy, the Ghoul and Maximus are called back into the spotlight as they move to the famous city of New Vegas.
This is the stronghold of Robert House, a pre-war billionaire who was seen at the end of season 1 at the villain round table at Vault Tec. As we have seen, the businessman will gain importance in season 2, the role of which has officially been reassigned to Justin Theroux. Nothing surprising since showrunners Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet had already confirmed this information a year ago, when the setting of New Vegas was made official: “In the world of Fallout, Las Vegas is the city of Robert House. Robert House will be involved in season 2.”
What do the games say about Robert House?
In New VegasRobert House is called Mister House and is the self-proclaimed ruler of the town. Still alive after the nuclear war, his body is connected to machines while his consciousness continues to live on as an immortal program. He is a man of great power whose death is never canonically confirmed.
Season 2 of Fallout takes place 15 years after the events of Fallout : New Vegas. We understand that the life or death status of Robert House is still unknown to our heroes, and especially to the Ghoul who is looking for him. Still, his existence might not be the biggest mystery surrounding the character to date. It seems that Amazon takes great pleasure in sowing doubt about the very identity of the Robert House of this season 2.

Who is Robert House really?
Played by Rafi Silver in the first season, it is Justin Theroux who takes up the torch in the second. The first made a brief appearance in episode 8 of season 1, but now he reappears in the first episode of season 2, in a television spot broadcast from the first minutes. The next moment, Justin Theroux’s character enters the frame, without ever introducing himself.
It would be easy to think that this is indeed the new face of Robert House. All of Amazon’s communications on this subject have always been very clear. In an interview granted to us, Justin Theroux himself despite himself maintains this gray area around the nature of his role. The actor says he accepted the project almost blindly, carried away by the trust he placed in Walton Goggins and the creative team. He declares:
“In blissful ignorance, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. Walton called me and said, ‘Hey, man, there’s a role that I think and we think would be a great fit for you.’ (…) He told me a little about it. I had no idea what he was talking about because I hadn’t seen the show, even though he is a dear friend. (…) You know, after watching the show, I was like, ‘Oh my God, it would be really cool to be able to evolve in this universe.’ And so, yeah, I was just thrilled and with the creative team behind it, Geneva, Graham, Jonah, I knew I was in really good hands. And I also knew that most, if not all, of my scenes would be with Walton.”
“I knew roughly where I wanted to place it. I knew at least the three rings of the target I was going to try to aim for. And then once we found our rhythm with this guy, it was pretty easy to nail the landing.“
The double-sided game
The problem is that his identity as Robert House is never officially confirmed in the events of the series. Worse still, no one seems to recognize him as such, even though the businessman is a public figure, whose image is plastered on every street corner, especially in the context of the riots against RobCo. The character of Justin Theroux describes himself as a sort of “fan” of Robert House, but never describes himself as the businessman orally.
Changing a character’s face from one season to another is not unusual in itself (hello The Witcher), but the staging of this episode suggests that it is not simply an actor replacement. The editing, the way in which the camera introduces this new protagonist and especially the way in which his identity remains constantly implicit give the impression of a perfectly voluntary ambiguity.
If this character was really the new official incarnation of Robert House, certain shots or dialogues would undoubtedly have been adjusted, or even reversed, to restore clearer continuity. Deciding to keep a sequence with the “old actor” when it would have been easy to film it with the new one is quite revealing of the direction taken by Amazon. The most attentive will have noticed that the X Ray function of the Prime Video player is also misleading. During the scenes with Justin Theroux, he is simply not mentioned. On the other hand, Rafi Silver is always indicated as being the interpreter of Robert House.

But who plays Justin Theroux in the end?
This observation leads to several possible theories. It is possible that Robert House had already put his longevity plan in place at the time which no longer allowed him to go out and go about his business in the world. We can therefore try to take Justin Theroux at his word when he says he is a fan of Robert House, knowing that he could very well have used his image to conduct his own experiments.
It is also possible that he was dispatched by Mr. House himself to continue his work on his behalf. After all, he still has the financial means, but is also in possession of cutting-edge technology that can easily be attributed to RobCo. Is Justin Theroux simply proxiing House’s affairs in order to go unnoticed?
