ONE of the big three mobile providers has quietly started upgrading customers onto its best network service.
EE has committed to giving out the free boost to everyone by the end of January next year.
But it appears some users have began receiving it now just in time for Christmas.
If you’re lucky to be selected early you’ll need to switch your mobile on and off to take advantage.
The move affects EE’s pay as you go customers.
A text message alerting those who have been upgraded reads: “Great news! We’ve updated some of your network settings, please restart your phone to make sure it’s up to date.”

While the wording is somewhat cryptic a follow-up message gives a bit more detail, as revealed by ISPReview.
Until now, EE’s pay as you go customers have not had access to 5G.

EE started giving new pay as you go customers access to 5G if they joined from December 10 onward.

But that’s all changing for existing customers too, with a roll out starting now until the end of January 2026.
The follow-up message says: “Hi from EE. Great news, 5G is now included with your Pay As You Go plan at no extra cost. If your device supports 5G, just restart it and enjoy!”
According to EE’s website there is “no need to switch SIMs or upgrade your plan”.
“Once we’ve let you know that 5G is available for you, switch your mobile off and then on again, and you’ll be connected to 5G,” it reads.
“You will have access to 5G by 31 January 2026.”
So be on the look out for a text informing you of the upgrade anytime from now until then.
