Hitting the “1.0” milestone last summer was the GNOME AI virtual assistant app called Newelle. This third-party GNOME app has continued evolving as an AI-focused assistant on the GNOME desktop and has now rolled out MCP server support to integrate with “thousands” of other apps.

The Newelle app now supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server support for AI agents to connect and interact with external data, tools, and systems for real-time context. Now that Newelle has MCP server support, it can interface with a lot more software supporting this open standard for more functionality and greater interoperability.

In addition to MCP server support, Newelle has added “Tools” in its latest release for extensions to add new tools in an easy manner. Large language models (LLMs) can also now be favorited by the user. Plus new shortcuts too.

More details on this new Newelle AI assistant app release via This Week in GNOME. Those wanting to try it out can find the new version via Flathub.
