The government will continue its investments in AI as a way to improve the UK’s networks of roads and rail, according to the chair of the Transport Select Committee.

Addressing transport and AI industry leaders in parliament, MP and committee chair Ruth Cadbury praised existing uses of AI and partnerships with specialist providers to tackle issues including potholes and train delays, noting that more would be coming.

At the address, Cadbury demonstrated the Robotiz3d autonomous pothole detection, prevention and repair technology system.

“Having a fully optimised transport network supported by the latest digital capabilities is vital for unlocking future economic growth,” commented Daren Wood, an event attendee and chief technology officer at rail tech provider Resonate Group.

“Britain’s roads and rail routes serve as critical national infrastructure connecting businesses, which in turn helps create jobs and opportunities for the next generation.”

Fellow attendee and head of public sector at Check Point Software Graeme Stewart added: “With AI set to play a major role in the future of the UK’s transport infrastructure, it’s crucial that the necessary security safeguards are put in place to protect these operations from outsider threats.

“Whether it’s the health service, schools or nurseries, hackers have proven that nothing is off limits, so policymakers overseeing roads, rail and transport systems must remain vigilant at all times.”
