The Instax Mini Evo Cinema is undoubtedly the most “conceptual” Instax ever offered by Fujifilm. Inspired by the Fujica Single-8 cameras produced between the 1960s and 1980s, the camera claims a direct affiliation with an era when amateur cinema rhymed with creative tinkering and homemade effects.
An instant camera that embraces its heritage
At the time, the Single-8 format was distinguished from Kodak’s Super 8 by several technical refinements: the possibility of rewinding the film to chain fades and overprints directly in the camera, or a metal pressure plate integrated into the body, which guaranteed greater sharpness. Details which marked an entire generation of amateur filmmakers, particularly in Japan.
The Mini Evo Cinema is obviously not a film camera, but it has the spirit of one. It’s a hybrid device: it captures digital photos, instantly prints them on Instax Mini film, and can also record short 15-second video clips. These videos obviously cannot be printed, but contribute to the “pocket cinema” experience claimed by Fujifilm.
The design clearly plays the nostalgia card, with a central dial called “Gen Dial” (or “Eras Dial” in Japan). It allows you to apply ten visual effects inspired by different periods: marked grain and washed out tones like the 1930s, brighter colors reminiscent of the 1980s… Nothing subtle or hidden here: you turn the dial, you see the effect, and you trigger. The Mini Evo Cinema can also wirelessly print photos sent from a smartphone, further blurring the line between digital photo and snapshot. It is clearly aimed at those who like to “play” with images, even if it means accepting a more expensive and bulkier device than a classic Instax.
In Europe, the Instax Mini Evo Cinema hybrid instant camera will be available from January 28, priced at €379.99. A high Price for an Instax, but consistent with its high-end positioning. At the same time, Fujifilm also launched the Instax Mini Link Plus smartphone printer, which promises more precise prints thanks to improved image processing. An interesting development, but almost secondary to the Mini Evo Cinema, much more talkative on an emotional level.
