PlayStation 6 at a glance

  • Manufacturing is thought to begin mid-2027
  • Price estimated at around $600
  • The PS6 might be a digital-only console, although a detachable disk drive is also rumoured
  • AMD Orion APU
  • Backwards compatibility for PS5 and PS4 games

PlayStation 6 rumoured release date

At the time of writing, there is no confirmed release date for the PlayStation 6. In fact, as reported by the BBC on the fifth anniversary of the PlayStation 5’s release, the VP of PlayStation Eric Lempel said the team was just hitting its stride with the PS5, which means the PS6 is not currently a priority.

However, according to known leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead on YouTube, it’s thought that Sony has contracts with TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) to begin manufacturing PS6 consoles in mid-2027. With that in mind, we can reasonably expect a PS6 launch won’t happen until at least the end of 2027.

While that may seem like a long time to wait, that hasn’t stopped people worrying that the PS6 might get delayed before this. With RAM prices continuously rising and in short supply, many are speculating that Sony might delay production until things calm down.

However, according to the above video, this shouldn’t be a cause for concern right now. While naturally it’s expected that companies are currently discussing the RAM shortage and its impact, Tom explains that realistically Sony wouldn’t be considering delaying production for something that won’t begin manufacturing until next year. So, for now at least, we shouldn’t worry that the PS6 will be delayed.

PlayStation 6 rumoured pricing

Much like its release date, there isn’t any concrete evidence for how much the PlayStation 6 is expected to cost. One rumour (which we’re hoping is correct) is that the PS6 is thought to be considerably cheaper than the upcoming Xbox Magnus. According to an X post, known tech leaker Kepler suggested that the PS6 will be $600, which is rumoured to be half the price of the Xbox Magnus.

Remember that there might also be various iterations that could impact the price. For example, the PS5 console comes as a Digital Edition (without a disk drive), with a disk drive and as the PS5 Pro iteration too. While there are rumours that the PlayStation 6 simply won’t ship with a disk drive (more on this later), we’ll simply have to wait and see.

PlayStation 6 design rumours

Even though production hasn’t even begun on the PS6, that hasn’t stopped people speculating about what it’ll look like. One notable rumour is that the PS6 will not ship with a disk-drive and will be a digital-only edition. It’s somewhat understandable, especially if you stream online rather than buy games outright. Even so, if true then this will undoubtedly divide gamers.

However, a recent rumour as reported by YouTuber Mystic, suggests that you will be able to purchase a detachable disc drive for your PS6.

Otherwise, back in 2023 Yanko Design reported on concept images created by Junwoo Kim, Hyeon Jeong Ra, Eun Kyung Shin, Kim Jiwoong, Gaeun Kang, LFD Official. According to the concept images, it’s hoped that the PS6 will retain features from the PS5, including its distinct panels, but instead sport more of a “boat-shaped design”.

In addition, the concept images show LED lights which are hoped to be customisable – which seems plausible considering the upcoming Steam Machine sports a similar customisable LED strip.

PlayStation 6 specs rumours

We might sound like a broken record at this point, but we must reiterate that Sony is yet to confirm any official specs for the PlayStation 6. However, there have been plenty of rumours and supposed leaks that, if true, paint the PS6 as a very exciting console.

According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, AMD Orion will be the APU inside the PS6 and, if the leaks are to be believed, will be very powerful. Not only is it promised to be more powerful than the likes of Xbox Magnus, as it’s monolithic and doesn’t require any extra materials, but it is also expected to enable the console to cost less than the Xbox and even potentially the PlayStation 5 Pro.

On the latter point, the reason for this is because Orion will be fitted with a 160W TDP for cooling – which is significantly less than the 200 to 240W alternative of the PS5 Pro.

Of course, as this hasn’t been confirmed by Sony then we should refrain from getting too excited. However, if true then it could mean the PlayStation 6 would not only be impressively powerful but it could even be cheaper than thought.

Finally, in the same video, it’s suggested that the PS6 should offer backwards compatibility for PS5 and PS4 games too.
