Although it has gone a little under the radar in France, having only been broadcast on Warner TV, Animal Kingdom was a phenomenon in the United States from 2016 to 2022. Aware of the aura of the series 75 episodes, Netflix will not have failed to promote the release of the latter, almost as counter-programming to a highly anticipated in-house production: season 4 of Chronicle of the Bridgertons. Result, yes Bridgerton very quickly occupied its usual place as the most viewed program currently on the service, Animal Kingdom responded present and seems well established on the Top 10 podium.
We discover “J”, 17 years old, whose mother’s death from an overdose led him to be taken in by his grandmother Smurf, whom he barely knows. He will quickly discover that she and her 4 sons are immersed in crime. Immersed in the business despite himself, he will have to prove his loyalty to the “clan”, even if it means sacrificing everything else.
Here are three good reasons to get started Animal Kingdom.
1 / Pour son casting
Animal Kingdom is one of those series where you keep saying “I’ve already seen it somewhere!” ”, although many have really made themselves known here. Which can sometimes result in a fairly pronounced gap between two roles. We think in particular of Shawn Hatosy. The actor recently won an Emmy Award for his appearance as Dr. Abbot in The Pitt. Here he plays Pope, J’s most unpredictable, disruptive and dangerous uncle. Just his look makes our blood run cold.

Speaking of J, he too is played by an actor well known to fans of Peaky Blinders, Find Cole. However, his character shares something in common with that of Michael Gray, cousin of the Shelbys: an inability to choose sides and a succession of bad decisions. The rest of the cast includes other big names from the small screen with a still very young Molly Gordon (Clear in The Bear), Ben Robson (Vikings), Jake Weary (It Follows) or even Scott Speedman (Dr. Marsh in Grey’s Anatomy). And at the top, sits the queen Ellen Barkinicon of the 80s and 90s, in the role of the most anxiety-inducing matriarch of our serial experience (We did, however, know Gemma from Sons of Anarchy).
2 / For his persistent discomfort
If you like them sticky atmospheresdisturbing, then Animal Kingdom is heaven on earth. Under the scorching Southern California sun, the tension is persistent and moments of calm constantly threaten to escalate. Twisted tricks, manipulations, murders, robberies and quasi-incestuous relationships, there is nothing beautiful or good in Animal Kingdom. Everything is just family toxicity within unhealthy and dangerous siblings.

Here, a hello can sound like a threat, a smile like blackmail and a few looks block your breath. Rarely have love and hatred been so inhabited by characters in such perfect balance. to the point where we don’t know, episode after episode, if they are going to kiss or kill each other. This is what allows Animal Kingdom to go the distance over six seasons, maintaining this duality. For those who like sweet series, Animal Kingdom is the exact opposite.
3 / Because it is contagious
We know that the last two seasons are the least appreciated of the showbut it’s easy to understand what kept us hooked for so long. Because the series likes to work on its characters on the body and that there is only the illusion of slowness. In reality, each episode is a new stone in a building which is built over the long term and whichwe never have any idea of what happens next. As soon as we think we can guess them, another problem, another plan, another crisis of ego or affection will come and undermine relationships. We go through the episodes with the furious desire to know how it can all end. Bad without a doubt, but for whom and to what extent?

Animal Kingdom produces a sort of fascination for the Cody family who we know are completely deranged, lost in a mixture of adrenaline and self-destruction, but whose we feel a certain attachment to each memberhoping despite everything that they end up in the morgue, in prison or with a psychologist. Maybe we too end up suffering from this toxic addiction that inhabits us. Is it serious, doctor? The six seasons ofAnimal Kingdom are available on Netflix.
