Every week, Netflix debuts a ton of new content for subscribers to stream. Watching all of it would take you until March even if you binged nonstop, so start your weekend with my three top movies and shows for the next seven days. If you’re a romantic, there’s a new season of Love is Blind, but you already know what to expect there, so I decided to preview a stark Polish drama, a documentary about a female chess prodigy, and a stylish Taiwanese thriller series.
This Week on Netflix: PCMag’s Picks
Queen Of Chess (Feb. 6)
The world of chess has traditionally been incredibly male-dominated, so when teenage Hungarian prodigy Judit Polgár became the youngest player ever to break into the FIDE top 100 rankings at 12, she shocked the world. New documentary Queen of Chess traces Polgár’s meteoric rise, facing off with legends like Garry Kasparov and exploring her expertise, which was specifically chosen by her scientist parents as part of a grand, and possibly unethical, experiment.

Lead Children (Feb. 11)
Inspired by real events from the 1970s, Polish drama series Lead Children stars Joanna Kulig as a young and ambitious doctor who is confronted with a group of children all suffering from the same mysterious illness. When she connects their condition to lead poisoning from a nearby smelter, she’s thrust into a struggle with the Communist Party, who need the smelter to stay open to keep the economy healthy. It’s the kind of story we don’t see often enough, and the creative team has won multiple awards.

Million-Follower Detective (Feb. 12)
Taiwanese thriller series Million-Follower Detective has an irresistible hook: an online fortune teller becomes a viral sensation by predicting the gruesome murders of a number of influencers. When one of her targets commits suicide by cop, the officer who pulled the trigger finds his life ruined by the incident. Teaming with a female detective and another vlogger, he must figure out what force led to the incident and whether the fortune teller is doing more than just predicting.
