ByteDance is developing an AI chip and is in talks with Samsung Electronics over foundry manufacturing, according to Reuters, as the Chinese tech giant seeks to secure supplies of advanced processors. Sources said ByteDance aims to obtain engineering samples by the end of March. The chip is designed primarily for AI inference workloads, with the company planning to produce at least 100,000 units this year and potentially scale output to as many as 350,000 units over time, the report said.
Discussions between the two sides are also said to include access to memory chip supply. With global demand for AI infrastructure surging, memory components remain in tight supply, increasing the strategic importance of the potential partnership. ByteDance said information about its in-house chip project was inaccurate, and Samsung declined to comment on the talks. [Reuters]
