Apple’s new Studio Display and Studio Display XDR have a lot of differences, but we can now add one more to the list: they come with different A19 chips.

Studio Display firmware update confirms two different A19 chips coming

Apple’s new Studio Display has long been rumored to feature an A19 chip—the same one that debuted in iPhone 17 last fall.

However, as discovered by MacRumors in new Studio Display firmware released today, it seems there are two different versions of the chip being used:

  • Studio Display has a standard A19 chip
  • Studio Display XDR has a more powerful A19 Pro chip

Both are significant upgrades over the A13 Bionic chip found in the 2022 Studio Display model.

That said, it’s not entirely clear why the new Studio Display would need an A19 in the first place. The main changes over the prior model involve Thunderbolt 5 and upgrades to the camera, speakers, and mics.

There are a lot of technology differences between the new Studio Display and Studio Display XDR. So it absolutely makes sense that the Studio Display XDR would include a more capable chip to power its mini-LED backlight.

Hopefully we’ll get more detail from Apple soon about some of the specific benefits of the new chips.

Both Studio Display models are available to pre-order now at Apple.com. The earliest shipping date for both products is next Wednesday, March 11.

Does it matter to you what chip the new displays have? Let us know in the comments.
