BMX SolidSafe Air hands-on: The thinnest Qi2 power bank yet – 9to5Mac
SHARE

I have been on the search for a thin MagSafe battery for years. I’ve tested dozens of these battery packs, and some have been fantastic, but they all share the same compromise, which is bulk. This year’s iPhone Air made me want a thin MagSafe battery solution even more. So when I saw that BMX released their SolidSafe Air, with a 5,000 mAh capacity and a thickness of less than 6.8mm, I knew I needed to give this one a shot. After spending a little over a week with it, here is what you need to know.

Be sure to check out our hands-on video of the SolidSafe Air and others!

There is a lot to like about this MagSafe power bank on paper. You get the fast Qi2 15W charging speeds, the ability to charge multiple devices, and it uses a solid-state battery in order to fit 5000mAh in such a small and thin chassis. Here is everything the battery can do:

  • 5,000mAh capacity
  • Qi2 15W wireless charging speeds
  • 20W USB-C out (Power Delivery)
  • Can charge two devices at once
  • 6.88mm thin and 116g
  • Titanium build
  • LED battery level indicators

It also charges via USB-C at 15W, which allows it to charge from 0% to 100% in less than 2 hours. I also like the fit and finish of it. The front side has this brushed titanium look, with the inside portion having a soft rubberized feel.

My experience

The main draw for me was the thinness of the power bank. I had never seen a power bank that thin. I have been using it alongside my iPhone 17 Pro, and it fits perfectly. As an iPhone 17 Pro and not a Pro Max user, I noticed that sometimes some power banks actually have a lip that goes over the 17 Pro because the battery is more meant to be used with the Pro Max. I had a feeling that in order to make this SolidSafe Battery thin, they had to make it long and wide like Apple did with their MagSafe power bank for iPhone Air. While it is a smidge wider than other power banks, and I mean a smidge, it still fits perfectly on my iPhone 17 Pro. You can see from my images that the battery lines up perfectly with the 17 Pro on all sides.

Because this is so thin and light, the power bank does not add much weight or thickness to the phone. For context, an iPhone 17 Pro is 8.75mm and weighs 206g, and the SolidSafe Air is 6.8mm and weighs 90g less. One more comparison I like to make is with Apple’s MagSafe battery of the iPhone Air, being 7.7mm and 127g. So you can understand just how small and light the SolidSafe battery is. I have been personally carrying it around in my fanny pack, and it adds little to no weight to my everyday carry.

Charging

When it came to charging, I used it mainly with my iPhone 17 Pro. I wanted to test to see just how much juice it actually gave me. I would throw this battery onto my iPhone 17 Pro when it had about 20% to 30% battery, and it would get to between 90% to 95% charge while I would still intermittently use the phone. It added very little bulk, and the brushed titanium finish makes it nice to hold and adds some passive grip as well. I also charged my AirPods Pro a few times wirelessly, and it worked as expected. The battery would get the slightest bit warm, but nothing alarming. The battery itself also charged very quickly. So it is nice to know that if I am in a rush, I would still be able to get a quick charge in.

The only thing I wish it had was an LCD to give me some battery percentage or charging diagnotics but I am sure that would have added bulk or reduced the battery capacity to make room for it, so I understand the compromise. But overall, this battery is fantastic. They do offer the regular SolidSafe 5k and 10k which gives you that display.

Pricing, availability & final thoughts

The BMX SolidSafe Air is available today on BMX’s website. They come in 3 colors: Silver, Gold, and Black (I have the silver one), and they are $59.

If you are in the market for a new MagSafe power bank and you care about thinness and portability, this is the best option out there. I am yet to see a battery bank that is this thin and fits the Apple aesthetic as well as it does. Even though BMX markets this as the iPhone Air companion, this battery also is great for anyone who has an iPhone with MagSafe and wants to reduce the bulk.

What do you think? Do you like the idea of thin MagSAfe batteries? Or would you rather the batteries just be bigger so you can have more capacity? Let’s discuss below.
