TL;DR

  • There’s a new reference to a previously unknown Galaxy Buds “Able” in Samsung’s Galaxy Buds app.
  • The name appears in a list also containing the Galaxy Buds 4 and Buds 4 Pro.
  • Despite the Galaxy Buds name, the model number associated with Able does not follow Samsung’s known earbud labeling.

Samsung’s been producing wireless earbuds for years now, but it’s only been a little over a month since we were introduced to its latest additions, the Galaxy Buds 4 and Galaxy Buds 4 Pro. Beyond to those two main models, every once in a while we get another entry in the Buds family, whether that’s something like a new pair of Buds FE, or the Galaxy Buds Core we saw launch last year. And today, we may have just identified the next new addition to the Galaxy Buds lineup.

For this find, we’re turning our attention to Samsung’s Galaxy Buds app. Looking through the text strings present within, all of sudden we see a new name jump out at us, next to those recent Galaxy Buds 4 models:

So, what the heck is the Galaxy Buds Able? Well, let’s start with the name. Oddly, while both the Buds 4 and Buds 4 Pro had internal codenames based on composers, as you see over on the right, the Buds Able codename appears to just be “able.”

Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority?

Based on the branding alone, we wouldn’t be surprised for these to have some kind of accessibility angle. As for exactly what that might entail, your guess is as good as ours, but maybe something positioned as an OTC hearing aid?

Then there’s the model number — and this is just as weird. Samsung tends to stick with SM-R* numbering for its Galaxy Buds models. That includes not just the primary entries, either: the Buds 3 FE are SM-R420, and Buds Core are SM-R410.

In fact, as near as we can tell, Samsung doesn’t currently have any SM-U* devices in its ecosystem. Its smartphones frequently end with a U for their US variants (the S26 is SM-S942U) but that’s not what we have here.

Finally, there’s another mismatch in this data set. While the shortest forms of the first two devices are listed as the “Buds4” and “Buds4 Pro,” this new model appears as “Galaxy Able” rather than “Buds Able.” We also feel like we have to acknowledge the possibility that Able is just a code name, and Samsung may not have settled on how it wants to market this model yet.

Where does this all leave us now? Well, we could continue to speculate with some increasingly half-cocked theories (what if if’s supposed to be “Buds A BLE” like Bluetooth Low Energy?), but we’re just going to have to be patient if we want to get to any real answers here. Maybe those will come in the form of a future app update. Maybe we’ll spot that SM-U600 model number on a Samsung database somewhere. For now, we’re keeping our eyes open, and will post any new finds we come across.

⚠️ An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release.
