A few years ago this idea might have seemed improbable. Adapting a creepypasta born on the internet into a real cinema film, with a substantial budget and an international release, was pure fantasy. And yet, Backrooms is indeed preparing to arrive in our cinemas and the first images confirm that the project is much more ambitious than we could imagine.

What is a creepypasta?

A creepypasta is a horror story born and distributed on the web, often in the form of text, image or video. The term comes from “copypasta”, which refers to content copied and pasted massively online. These are stories that generally play on the unease and the strange, as with horror threads ultimately. Over time, certain creepypastas have become cultural phenomena in their own right, giving birth to extended universes, video games, and now even film adaptations.

After a short and enigmatic teaser a few weeks ago, the first trailer sets the tone. We find the very essence of the original creepypasta, namely a heavy atmosphere, disturbing spaces, and above all a fear suggested rather than shown. The VHS aesthetic and this constant feeling of unease are at the heart of the experience, to our great misfortune. The film also appears to develop a narrative centered around a therapist ready to delve into the Backrooms to find a missing patient.

At only 20 years old, Kane Parsons has created a work that is fully in line with the horror popularized by A24. The casting also reinforces this vision, with recognized actors like Chiwetel Ejiofor (Twelve Years A Slave) or Renate Reinsve. For the first time, a work originating from a simple internet meme benefits from such serious cinematographic treatment. The parallel with other recent projects, such as the adaptation of the game Exit 8shows that liminal spaces are becoming a new trend in contemporary horror. But the most interesting remains this mix between psychological horror and the genre of fouind footage, which reinforces the immersion but also testifies to the attention paid to the details of the production.

From the internet to dark rooms

As a reminder, the world of Backrooms was born on forums and online platforms. These stories are based on the simple but terribly effective concept of empty, infinite spaces, familiar but deeply disturbing. In 2022, Kane Parsons, a teenager of only 16 years old, transformed this concept into a series of videos on YouTube. The success was immediate, so much so that one of them now has more than 70 million views.

Faced with this enthusiasm, the A24 studio decided in 2023 to focus on a film adaptation by entrusting the production to its own creator. A bold, but logical choice. Three years later, the result is starting to reveal itself, and it clearly exceeds expectations. It remains to be seen whether the film will manage to keep its promises over time. The release is scheduled for May 29 in the United States, and June 17, 2026 in France.
