No more searching for contact options, no more cumbersome filling out of forms: instead, simply cancel a contract with a click of the mouse. Such a cancellation button must be on the websites of retailers, service providers and many other companies from June 19, 2026, and must be clearly visible and clearly labeled, according to the Bremen consumer advice center.

Easy to handle
For example, “Cancel contract” could appear on this button. The button requirement applies to goods, online services and insurance. The revocation must not be more complicated than the conclusion of the contract.
For example, according to the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations, a log-in is only permitted if it was necessary for the contract. In addition, only a few details may be required such as name, order number and an email address for confirmation. A reason for the revocation may not be required.
Confirmation comes immediately
If consumers declare their revocation digitally in this way, this must be confirmed directly to them in a savable form, for example by email. However, you can still revoke your consent in the usual written manner.

Important to know: The actual right of withdrawal does not change as a result of the new function. Revocation is still only possible within the statutory period, which is usually 14 days after conclusion of the contract or receipt of the goods. If the new button is missing, the deadline can be extended to up to twelve months and 14 days, according to Bremen consumer advocates.

Not yet implemented across the EU
The button requirement is based on an EU directive. However, this has not yet been implemented in all member states, according to the European Consumer Center.
Since the directive has already been implemented into German law, the cancellation button is mandatory for all contracts to which German law applies. In order for it to be valid in other EU countries, it depends on its implementation in the respective national law.
