Azure Linux 4.0 is based on Fedora 43 and receives security updates from Microsoft.

Microsoft

Azure Linux 4.0 – an open source Linux-based operating system – was unveiled at Microsoft’s Build 2026 developer conference. In contrast to previous versions, Microsoft’s Linux distribution is now available for free.

Technically, Azure Linux 4.0 is based on Fedora 43 and uses the same RPM-based package management system. The Linux derivative has reportedly been optimized to run workloads on the Azure cloud service. Microsoft wants to take care of bug fixes and security updates.

Azure Linux 4.0 is not intended for end users and is therefore text-based. That’s why the size is just under 300 megabytes.
