Last June, the Raspberry Pi 5 was equipped with an AI kit designed with Hailo to offer users a way to use artificial intelligence locally without using the cloud. The release of this kit priced at $70 is not particularly surprising at a time when the biggest players in tech are moving towards AI.
Raspberry climbs up again, he doesn’t want to miss the bandwagon. The charity is teaming up with Sony to launch the Raspberry Pi Ai Camera. It must make it possible to develop “ cutting-edge artificial intelligence solutions that process visual data ».
The Raspberry Pi AI Camera equipped with a Sony sensor is revealed
The Raspberry Pi AI Camera features Sony’s IMX500 sensor. The Japanese manufacturer’s device, equipped with a 12 megapixel camera covering 76° field of view, can perform intelligent image processing thanks to its accelerator. The Raspberry Pi’s processor, freed from processing neural network models, can then devote itself to other tasks. The IMX500 features an integrated, low-power inference engine and allows for manual focusing.
« The IMX500’s tight integration with the Raspberry Pi camera technology stack allows users to deploy their own neural network models with minimal effort » assures the two entities. The Raspberry Pi AI Camera therefore includes an IMX500, but also an RP2040 responsible for loading the sensor firmware.
Good news, it is compatible with all of the foundation’s single-board computers. Eben Upton, head of Raspberry Pi, says he is excited to see what users can do with the power of this brand new device.
Remember that Sony made a minority investment in Raspberry Pi at the end of 2023 in order to provide innovative solutions using its Edge AI equipment. Seeing such a project sprout is therefore not such a big surprise. The Raspberry Pi AI Camera is sold from €79 (the Price varies by a handful of cents depending on the reseller.).
