It is difficult not to appreciate a walk on the small roads of the French Riviera. If you add the sun and a temperature of 25 ° C, you get the ideal conditions, both for the biker and for the motorcycle. Offering an electric trail was obvious for Can-Am. And for good reason, this type of machine is to the motorcycle what the SUV is to the automobile. With no less than 5 trails in the top 10 motorcycle sales in 2023, it was logical and even necessary for the Canadian manufacturer to offer an electric variant.
An identical structure, but a different geometry
The manufacturer’s objective was to minimize the costs, while meeting the specifications of a real trail (we will come back to this formulation in the following). Result: Origin shares a lot of parts with the pulse. However, the two motorcycles are distinguished on all points. In addition to the saddle height which peaks at 86.5 cm (perfect for people between 1.75 m and 1.90 m), the ground clearance was logically increased to reach 27.4 cm. The suspensions, the wheels, the wheelbase, the saddle or the driving position are specific to this off-road version.
Almost identical characteristics
- Displaying 35 kW of power (therefore A2 compatible), the Origin is also available in 11 kW version (125 cc equivalent).
- 6 driving modes are available on the trail, which takes over the four of the pulse, but adds two all-terrain modes.
- The tires and wheels are different, with 18 inch back and 21 inch at the front. An asymmetry specific to the trail: the front wheel at the front makes it possible to better free yourself from the nests-of-poule, hollow, bumps and other unwelcome reliefs, when the little on the back sends the torque more easily to the ground.
- Obviously, the travel is higher with 255 mm for the origin against 140 mm for the pulse. The wheelbase is also revised with 1,503 mm. The length goes to 2,204 mm. The handlebars is 861 mm wide.
- On the performance side, the Origin is “happy” from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, against 3.8 seconds for the pulse. An unimportant detail. The weight also increases by 10 kilos, reaching 187 kg.
- Autonomy is also planed, since the origins are given for 145 km (in town). In fact, we have not noticed any real difference, insofar as the pulse encourages more than the big sister.
- For the rest, the trail is adorned with the same 10.25 inch touch screen serving as a dashboard, Apple Carplay, regenerative braking, LED lighting, 8.7 kWh battery and sound Liquid temperature control system.
On the road: high -perched comfort
On the handlebars, the origins that seemed more demanding is on the contrary even more fun and, paradoxically, easier to drive. The suspensions offer more flexibility than the roadster, without ever being soft. The wheel hung, helped by the crampt tires that are doing rather well on the bitumen. The angle is more progressive, more easily controllable. Even strong braking does not plunge the front over. Where the pulse was placed in a rail, the Origin offers more tolerance.
The kilometers paraded on the asphalt and against all odds, the origin was even more pleasant than the roadster. The 129 km/h tackle quickly, but will frustrate more than one biker, because you will not be able to go to infinity and beyond.
On gravel and earth: it’s easy and funny
Then arrived the session off the beaten track. Finally, on a course strewn with holes, stones and sand. We found ourselves on a kind of kind sample from Dakar.
And it was also at the time that a large smile took place on the face of your servant. The handling remained excellent, while the tires resumed grip intermittently. Origin is able to play out of bitumen, which is quite paradoxical, because the instant couple is not precisely adapted to this kind of practice.
The rear can go on demand, but come back immediately in the row as soon as the “gas” are no longer reduced. The feeling on the pebbles has no equal. Origin does not pretend and will fill the outset followers. All in a silence that the noise of the stones is basting comes to break up.
But let’s moderate ourselves somewhat. It is very likely that the origins will not suit Yamaha Yz fans. Ditto for the followers of Wheeling as long as they have not changed the plate. Too easy, silent, the origin wants to be very chic, maybe too much. But, is that what we expect from a motorcycle at 17,000 euros?
Autonomie: How-how-to
Difficult to establish a real evaluation here. The off-piste ultimately consumes little, the speed being limited.
And the rest got down. So we have chosen to measure several short portions and make an average of it. Count 80 to 90 km in mixed. Like the pulse and while having fun with the handle of electrons.
The recharging is long, and it takes an hour for the battery to be filled by 20% to 80%. This is the big weak point.
Apple Car Play on a motorcycle
During this press event, we were unable to try the application, which promises, among other things, to control the load remotely. However, Carplay is still there and completely identical to the pulse. Namely a huge display whose touch is deactivated as soon as the wheels run.
This allows essential information (speed, autonomy, chosen fashion) on the left, and all carplay on the right.
The controls are made through physical keys. The control commodo is identical to that of the pulse, with the same advantages (controllable with gloves without worry and intuitive) and the same faults (the keys are too tight and the indicators too below the control keys of the menu).
If the screen can be tickled, some deeming the uselessness of such a surface, not having to leave the road to the next long to know the next bifurcation is a real plus. Remove Carplay and the screen has a graphic style in gray gradient. It’s simple, efficient, legible and fluid. The work done is successful.
