After months of leaks, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are official – and they’re big departures from last year’s Pro-level iPhone collection.

This year’s iPhone 17 Pro range looks radically different, featuring a new glass and aluminium rear, along with what Apple has dubbed a camera ‘plateau ’- a new camera housing that extends all the way across the top of the phone.

It’s not just a new look; the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max offer improved screens, enhanced front and rear camera hardware, top-end performance, and the best iPhone battery life yet..

Here’s everything you need to know about the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, from the all-important pricing and release date details to key features and specs. For information on the iPhone 17, we’ve got you covered.

iPhone 17 Pro release date and pricing

Apple has confirmed that the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are set to be available for pre-order this Friday, 12 September 2025, ahead of a full release a week later on Friday, 19 September 2025.

Despite rumours of potentially higher prices from this year’s Pro collection, the iPhones maintain the same £1099/$1099 for the Pro and £1199/$1199 for the Pro Max, although this time with a doubled 256GB option at the entry-level. The Pro Max also features a new 2TB storage option, although it’s quite expensive at £1999/$1999.

iPhone 17 Pro features and specs

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are big departures from last year’s Pro iPhones in terms of design, offering a completely new look that helps them stand out from the crowd.

Interestingly, Apple has opted for an aluminium frame this time around – previously one of the key differentiating features of the Pro phones – and has also replaced the all-glass rear with a combination of aluminium and glass. The bigger change, however, is the camera bump.

It’s no longer a square that sits in the upper-left corner of the phone. Instead, it’s now a bar – or a plateau, as Apple calls it – that extends across the entire top edge of the phone. Apple explains that this extra space stores other phone components, allowing for larger batteries to be used.

And that is true, with both the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max offering a significant increase in battery life, providing 33 and 39 hours of video playback, respectively, with an additional two hours if you opt for the eSIM-only variant of the phone. Charging is also faster at 40W, with boosted 25W MagSafe charging also available; the former manages a 50% charge in just 20 minutes.

The rear-facing camera offering has also seen an upgrade this year, featuring a triple 48MP system with a new 48MP 4x telephoto lens. The sensor within is 58% larger than the 12MP alternative from last year’s Pro models, seriously boosting light intake that should give it an edge in low-light situations, and it’s also capable of providing optical-quality 8x zoom.

Combined with the other Fusion-branded lenses, Apple claims you’ve essentially got eight levels of zoom available from the rear snappers.

Flip the phone over and you’ll also see a new 18MP selfie camera. As well as supporting Apple’s Centre Stage tech that tracks your face and keeps you in frame, the selfie camera sports a new square-shaped sensor.

Unlike traditional 4:3 sensors, the square sensor allows the phone to take both landscape and portrait selfies without rotating the phone or compromising on overall quality. It’s an impressive feature we’ve not seen from any other manufacturer, and we imagine it’ll be popular with creators in particular.

Speaking of, video capabilities have seen a boost with the introduction of dual camera recording, allowing you to record from both the front- and rear-facing cameras at once, and the phones can now record in Apple’s industry-standard ProRes RAW video format for better post-production editing options.

The 6.3- and 6.9-inch screens of the Pro and Pro Max remain largely the same, albeit with a boosted 3000-nit peak brightness and a new seven-layer anti-reflective coating that Apple claims should make glare and reflections much less distracting, even in outdoor conditions.

It’s something we’ve already seen from devices like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, so it’ll be interesting to see how Apple’s implementation compares.

Elsewhere, users can look forward to a boost in power with the combination of the new Apple A19 Pro chipset and a vapour chamber cooling system. Apple claims that the combo delivers 40% better sustained performance than the iPhone 16 Pro, and essentially means that your phone should stay cool for longer, even when gaming.
