AI in web browsers, what does each one offer?
SHARE

Last week we talked about the new contest in the eternal war of web browsers, a confrontation that, This time, artificial intelligence is at its epicenter. Yes, the integration of AI in web browsers is, now, the great contest between all the technology companies that want to convince us that, every time we access the Internet, we do so through their browser, compared to the proposals of their many competitors.

As we already told you a few weeks ago, on this occasion there is a striking circumstance, and that is that the “big ones”, that is, the best known and most employed, They are the ones who are advancing the slowest in this direction. Thus, we have a series of limited integrations in Microsoft Edge (which is the one that stands out the most within this group), followed by Google Chrome. And, for its part, Safari remains in line with Apple when it comes to AI, while Firefox seems to have decided not to enter this contest. The great exception among the historical ones is, without a doubt, Operawhich has been doing its best since day one, demonstrating (once again, as it has done throughout its history) that innovation is in its DNA.

This, of course, has provided fertile ground for other technology companies, especially those specialized in this field, which are proposing great advances in the integration of AI in web browsers, in some cases with much more advanced integrations, and in others directly designing browsers from scratchso that artificial intelligence is the basis of its proposal. And here, again, express recognition to Opera because, as we will see later, it has not opted for one possibility or another, but rather offers a proposal in each sense.

AI Added vs Built-in Source

Not all browsers that claim to have artificial intelligence offer the same level of integration. In fact, a good part of the proposals that have emerged in recent months belong to a category that we could classify as added AI: nconventional navigators to which, at some point in development, a layer of artificial intelligence has been added. This can take the form of a floating chatbot, a button that offers page summaries, or a series of tools that expand already known functions, such as assisted writing or search improvement. They are useful functions, yes, but they do not change the way we use the browser: we continue browsing as always, but with some new help at hand.

On the other hand, browsers with integrated AI from the beginning – what some already call agentic browsers – start from a radically different approach. They are not limited to incorporating individual functions, but They reconstruct the very logic of navigation. It is no longer just about visiting pages or searching for information, but about expressing intentions that the AI interprets and executes for us. This integration completely transforms the paradigm: the browser does not act as a viewer, but as an agent that interprets, decides and operates on our behalf. It is a change of substance, not of form. And in this new scenario, what is at stake is not only efficiency, but the very role of the user in the web experience.

AI in web browsers, what does each one offer?

Browsers with built-in AI of origin

This category includes browsers that not only “add” artificial intelligence as another function, but also have been conceived from the ground up with AI at the center of their proposal. They are tools that do not limit themselves to responding or suggesting, but act directly on the website on behalf of the user. What they propose is a completely different navigation logic: the user expresses an intention, and the browser takes care of the rest. It is not about opening tabs and searching for information, but about delegating complete tasks to an AI integrated into the very structure of the browser.

Opera Neon

One of the most ambitious examples is Opera Neon. This proposal from the historic European firm Opera is designed as an environment where artificial intelligence acts on behalf of the user. Instead of tabs, Neon introduces the concept of Tasks: independent spaces that represent specific projects or intentions—such as planning a trip, researching a topic, or comparing products. Within each Task, the AI interprets what the user wants to do and executes actions that previously required multiple steps. Added to this are Cards, reusable instruction blocks that allow you to automate tasks, generate content or structure information without the need to navigate in a traditional way. And all this reinforced by a specific function called Neon Do, which allows AI to act directly on the structure of the pages without exposing sensitive data.

Perplexity Comet

Another important proposal is Comet, the browser presented by Perplexity. Your bet consists of eliminate tabbed chaos and replace it with a continuous flow of thoughtaccompanied by an AI that not only responds, but executes actions based on orders in natural language. Comet allows you, for example, to summarize articles, plan routes, write emails based on the content on the screen or compare data without changing tabs. Everything is done from a side panel that acts as a cognitive co-pilot. Its stated goal is to understand how the user thinks, learn from their habits and adapt their behavior to anticipate what they need at any given moment.

ChatGPT Atlas

Finally, Atlas represents OpenAI’s official entry into the field of browsers. Based on Chromium, this browser revolves around ChatGPT, which acts as the main assistant at all times. From the first tab, the experience is organized around interactions with the AI: you can ask questions, ask for explanations about content on the screen, obtain summaries, definitions or counterarguments by simply selecting text. In addition, Atlas incorporates memory: it remembers the user’s interests, habits and cognitive style to adapt their responses and maintain continuity between sessions. All browsing occurs locally unless the user activates AI, and private data is not shared by default.

Added AI

Although the most innovative browsers have been designed from the ground up with artificial intelligence in mind, the truth is that a good part of users continue to use more traditional proposals, which have chosen to integrate AI functions progressively. This approach has the advantage of maintaining familiarity in the user experience, but at the same time it usually offers more limited functionalities than those allowed by agentic browsers. Even so, some of these browsers have advanced very significantly, and in this section we review the main ones.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome, the most used browser in the world, is not known for being at the forefront in this field, at least with regard to its public distribution. Although some preliminary versions have allowed us to see experimental functions such as summary generation or intelligent text editing within the browser, Its integration with Gemini – Google’s AI model – remains partial. Chrome’s approach is being extremely cautious, possibly so as not to disrupt the traditional user base or open up complex privacy debates. Even so, AI is expected to gain more and more weight in future versions, especially if the competition continues to set the pace.

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is, by far, the traditional browser that has opted the most for artificial intelligence. The Microsoft team has integrated Copilot as a side assistant, capable of answering questions, summarizing texts, generating content and explaining web pages in real time. Additionally, features such as text rewriting or PDF drawing tools show how AI is extending to everyday browser tasks. Edge also benefits from its deep integration with Windows and OpenAI models, allowing it to offer more advanced responses than other browsers with similar features.

Opera One

Opera One represents the other side of the historical Opera, one that relies on a classic interface but enhanced with well-integrated AI functions. His assistant Aria is the axis of this proposal: a conversational model integrated directly into the interface that allows you to interact with any content on the web, make contextual queries or generate responses based on the information being displayed. Opera One maintains its focus on speed and customization, making its proposal one of the most balanced between tradition and modernity.

Brave Browser

Brave Browser has been adding artificial intelligence functions without altering your commitment to privacy. The browser incorporates Leo, a conversational assistant capable of summarizing pages, answering questions or translating texts. Unlike other browsers, Brave places special emphasis on local processing and limiting data sending to the cloud, making it an interesting option for those who want to benefit from AI without giving up too much personal information. Of course, its proposal is still somewhat more limited than that of Edge or Opera, although it is evolving rapidly.

Other options

Beyond the big names, there are a growing wave of alternative browsers that are experimenting with new ways to integrate artificial intelligence. Although not all of them have the support of large corporations or a massive user base, their creative approach and pace of innovation make them options to take into account. Here are some of the most notable ones.

  • SigmaOS: A productivity-focused browser that has begun to integrate AI tools for task organization, summaries, and window management. Its proposal is based on a more efficient multitasking environment, where artificial intelligence acts as contextual and constant help.
  • Sidekick: Designed especially for digital workers, Sidekick integrates AI features to manage tabs, prioritize tasks, and optimize workflow. Its focus is closer to that of a productivity assistant than that of a conventional browser, with a clear orientation towards teamwork and automation.
  • Liner: This emerging browser focuses on content curation and information analysis. With its AI system, it allows you to automatically highlight, save and classify useful information, ideal for those who research or study. It also offers contextual responses and personalized recommendations.
  • Ghostery Private Browser AI Edition: A special edition of the privacy-focused browser, now powered with an AI assistant capable of filtering, blocking and explaining suspicious elements on web pages. It combines the functions of a secure browser with those of a real-time smart advisor.
  • My Browser con SmartBar: Although very minimalist, Min has added an AI-powered search and suggestions function, called SmartBar, which interprets the user’s intent and suggests actions, results or summaries directly from the navigation bar. It is a modest proposal, but effective.

The integration of artificial intelligence in web browsers It’s not just a fad: it marks a structural change in how we interact with the Internet. Whether they are discreet assistants that enrich the classic experience or autonomous agents capable of acting on their own, we are at the beginning of a profound transformation in the way we navigate, search and decide on the Internet.

As more browsers adopt—or are directly built around—these technologies, the user’s choice will no longer depend solely on design or speed, but also the degree of intelligence, personalization and autonomy they offer. In this new scenario, it’s not just about which browser is faster or prettier, but which one best understands what we want to do… and does it for us.
