Airstream’s first all-electric travel trailer, the Basecamp 20Xe, offers a new type of off-grid adventure, and it’s available to purchase now at authorized dealerships.
Starting at $76,900, the Basecamp 20Xe, or just “Xe,” is an electric version of Airstream’s Basecamp 20 model ($56,900). It’s 20-feet long with dedicated sleeping space for four (though that might be tight), and an induction stove instead of the Basecamp 20’s two-burner gas stove.

Why pay $20,000 for the electric version? For more energy independence, which could allow you to stay off-grid for longer. The trailer features a 10.kWh lithium battery, which recharges via 600W of rooftop solar. It’s essentially a mobile electric generator, with enough juice to run appliances like an AC and microwave, and to power outlets for your laptop or phone.
“The Basecamp 20Xe has been updated with a fully inverted power system, which includes a high-capacity lithium battery, as well as a converter, an inverter, a robust solar power system, and energy management systems,” Airstream tells us. “The rooftop solar panels are custom-made for Airstream with a flat design engineered to work efficiently in partial shade.”
The trailer’s battery cannot charge through EV charging stations, and instead plugs into standard outlets at RV parks.
“The Basecamp 20Xe is charged with connection to 30A shore power featuring a NEMA TT30-R plug for servicing 110V AC 30A single phase electric,” Airstream says. “The Xe is not designed to utilize EV charging stations or fast charging technology.”

The Xe also comes with a 20-pound propane tank for backup. Adventurers can combine it with solar power to run the water heater and furnace and for outdoor grilling.
“The Basecamp Xe is testament to the fact that travelers today want the freedom to take whatever kind of trip they have in mind,” says Airstream President and CEO Bob Wheeler. “Electrical independence is a key part of that equation. With this truly electric-first travel trailer, we’re pushing the benchmark ahead and enabling Airstream owners with the flexibility to maximize their travel adventures.”

It’s “engineered for tough terrain,” with a 3-inch lift, rugged tires, and surface protection against brush and branches. Inside, travelers can eat at a small dinette, take warm showers, and use the optional composting toilet upgrade. For a bit of fun, Airstream added a three-speaker JBL Audio Sound System.

The Airstream Basecamp 20Xe will compete with two new entrants into the electric travel trailer space, Lightship and Pebble Flow. The Lightship electric RV debuts this summer with a limited-edition $250,000 version. Subsequent versions will get down to $125,000. The Pebble Flow arrives this spring, starting at $109,500.
While both are pricier than the Airstream, they have more sophisticated battery systems that propel the trailers on their own as the vehicle in front pulls them down the highway. This is something Airstream explored but did not ultimately bring to market.
“The Basecamp 20Xe cannot be self-propelled by its power system,” Airstream says. “Airstream explored this feature in its eStream Concept Travel Trailer, and the company will continue to explore and advance new features guided by customer insights that focus on versatility and energy independence.”
