AN Aldi shopper has shared their disappointment and anger over a packaging issue online after they saw that they were shortchanged.

The customer questioned why their frozen bag of food contained much less than advertised, prompting an Aldi employee to speak out on the cause.

They shared their frustrations in a Reddit post on Tuesday, posting an image of their bag of frozen breaded chicken breast sitting atop a food scale.

The customer explained that they had opened the bag to only find three chicken breast filets, prompting them to verify the weight of the bag.

While the bag was advertised as containing 24 ounces of chicken, the scale only read 18.59 ounces.

“24 oz?” the Aldi shopper captioned the post.

They noted that they had ordered the frozen product via Instacart, complaining that they likely would have noticed how light the bag was had they selected it in the store.

“More than a little mildly infuriating!” fumed the customer.

A fellow Aldi shopper chimed in, pointing out that it was probably a faulty bag, as they purchased that brand of frozen chicken frequently but never only had three filets.

A second Redditor claiming to be an Aldi worker assured the customer that it was “definitely an underfilled bag,” which happened every once in a while.

“Sometimes, the package will be sealed with absolutely nothing in it,” explained the employee. “We try to catch them before they hit the shelves, but it’s not always possible.”

The worker suggested bringing the faulty product back to Aldi, noting that the store would likely be happy to refund the customer and provide a replacement.

Another user similarly commented that the shopper could report the item on the Instacart app to receive a refund or credit for a replacement.

MEATY MESS

It’s not uncommon for food products to weigh less than advertised.

One Walmart shopper shared a TikTok video last February depicting her weighing an unopened package of Great Value bacon.

Although the product was labeled as 12 ounces, it weighed in at only 7.9 ounces on the customer’s food scale.

“Alright, so get a load of this,” said the shopper. “This is an unopened package of bacon, right. It says that it’s 12 ounces. It was like $4. I was just curious, because I know everybody keeps saying that we’re not getting screwed, but look at that. That’s with the package.”

The customer proceeded to remove the packaging and weigh the six bacon slices, which came out to just 7.16 ounces.

What to do if your food product is mislabeled

If your food product weighs less than the labeled amount, there are a few things you can do:

  • Return the item to the customer service desk for a replacement or refund
  • Contact the manufacturer directly to report the issue
  • Contact your local consumer protection agency if the problem persists or is significant

“They are literally scamming us,” she fumed in the video’s text overlay.

“So shrinkflation isn’t real and they’re not scamming us? Right,” concluded the Walmart shopper.

The retail giant previously came under fire for false advertising on its product labels, with shoppers being overcharging on certain pay-by-weight items.

Subway also got caught up in a lawsuit for its “grossly misleading” subs, with customers claiming they’d been receiving less and less meat in their sandwiches.
