ALDI has released its own version of a sold out item in a bid to copy one of it’s biggest rivals Trader Joe’s.

The budget-friendly supermarket chain has put out its dupe for just $3.49, and is already going down well with shoppers.

Aldi has released its own Kimbap, a Korean sushi that has been driving shoppers mad at Trader Joe’s.

The new fully-cooked Kimbap can be found in the frozen aisle right now, just as shoppers began to run out of places to find it.

It comes in two flavors, Traditional and Tuna Mayo, both selling as eight hand rolled pieces costing $3.49 each.

The Traditional option has been called a “Korean-style imitation crab, egg, carrots, spinach, and pickled daikon in a seaweed rice roll.”

While the Tuna Mayo has been described as “Tuna mayo & perilla leaf in a seaweed rice roll.”

It’s not the first time Aldi has tried its hand at the sushi game.

The chain has previously stocked a similar Kimbap in Spicy Tuna With Gochujang, Kimchi & Tofu, Spicy Salmon and BBQ Beef Bulgogi flavors.

The new Kimbap flavors are already a hit with Aldi shoppers, who have rushed online to share their thoughts.

On the social media platform Reddit, one person wrote: “I grabbed both the other day while I was on my break, I liked the tofu kimchi more but the spicy tuna was good also.

“Highly recommend if anyone finds them in their stores.”

Another said: “I went back to get more, and was grateful to see folks had snapped up the spicy tuna and left the tofu ones behind.”

But some are reporting issues with finding the items at their local Aldi.

Some have even claimed that Trader Joe’s is the only place they can find the Kimbaps.

The shopper added: “I can only find these at Trader Joe’s and not my local Aldi.”

How many Aldi stores are there in the US?

AS of May 12, 2025, there are 2,510 Aldi stores operating across 41 states and territories in the United States.

Florida leads with 244 locations, followed by Illinois (215), Ohio (170).

In 2025, the company plans to open 225 new stores.

ALDI EXPANSION

Despite potential troubles with Kimbap supply, nothing is slowing down Aldi in its expansion plans.

Aldi plans to open 800 new locations by 2028, and 40 have already popped up in 2025.

The chain is aiming to open 225 new spots by the end of this year, and if it hits it, it will mark the highest amount of new stores Aldi has ever opened in a single year in the US.

About 220 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores that Aldi acquired will also be converted to smaller Aldi formats by 2027.b

Aldi CEO Jason Hart said: “With the acquisition of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets, Aldi will serve even more communities in the Southeast, bringing us closer to our customers in a region where we’ve already experienced significant demand for affordable, quality groceries.”

Among the 40 that have already opened, 18 of them can be found in Florida.

Most of these were former Winn-Dixie spots, which Aldi acquired back in February.

Other Aldi stores opening in June include in Washington, Philadelphia and on Staten Island.
