Alexa improves detection with its connected cameras and bells

Until now, the notifications sent by Alexa via the connected cameras and bells were based on a simple movement detection. An effective, but often too sensitive method: a cat that crosses the courtyard or a agitated tree could be enough to trigger an alert.

More efficient presence detection

Amazon now introduces the possibility of differentiating the presence of someone from other movements, as identified The Alexians. The cameras and bells of the Ring range as well as certain Switchbot models can inform the assistant when a human silhouette is detected in their field of vision. Notifications are more targeted, and they are received both on Echo devices and smartphones.

This function remains absent from the Alexa routines, which limits the potential for the moment. It is therefore impossible to automate the ignition of external lighting or to trigger a specific alert only in case of human detection. Amazon suggests that these integrations will arrive later.

To activate the function, simply open the Alexa application, access “devices” and select your camera or video doorbell, then open the parameters via the core -shaped icon. It is then necessary to activate the “presence detection ads”.

Another novelty: the detection of packages of packages by connected bells. When this function is activated, Alexa warns the user as soon as a delivery man deposits a package in front of the door. A way to reduce the risk of theft or forgetting!

This option is available on all ring bells, with the exception of the Door View Cam model. As with presence detection, it is not yet integrated into the Alexa routines, but could ultimately allow even more relevant uses, such as sending a vocal message to thank you to the delivery man or to automatically record an image.

These two functions are not exclusive to Ring products, although Amazon owns it. They are part of the Alexa Smart Home API and can therefore be adopted by any compatible manufacturer. Switchbot has already started there, and other brands could follow.

With the arrival of Alexa+, the integration of these capacities should accelerate. Future Amazon AI agents will be able to dialogue directly with manufacturers’ APIs, which will facilitate the configuration of these options.
