Labor Day is held every year to celebrate the workforce in the US.

Per the USPS website, the service will observe Labor Day, so Americans should expect some delays in the service.

When USPS paused its services for Memorial Day, customers were unable to buy stamps at the branches.

USPS follows the federal calendar for holidays, meaning its services are frozen 11 times throughout the year.

In just a few short weeks, USPS is expected to grind to a halt on Columbus Day on October 13 and Veterans Day on November 11.

Also coming up before the end of the year is Thanksgiving on November 27 and Christmas on December 25.

To prepare for the USPS blackout, Americans are advised to work around the holiday and send all important mail beforehand.

USPS is not the only mail service expected to shut down, as FedEx’s main service will also not be running on September 1.

According to its website, FedEx Freight will also be paused but the company will still be running a few key services.

The FedEx Office will be running on modified hours so shoppers are encouraged to contact their local office to find out exact operating times.

FedEx Custom Critical will be open, as it is for every other major holiday.

But FedEx Logistics will not be running on Labor Day.

WHAT ELSE IS CLOSED

The American banking system will also be put on pause for Labor Day.

Federally recognized American holidays

  • New Year’s Day – January 1
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day – January 20
  • Washington’s Birthday – February 17
  • Memorial Day – May 26
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day – June 19
  • Independence Day – July 4
  • Labor Day – September 1
  • Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day – October 13
  • Veterans Day – November 11
  • Thanksgiving – November 27
  • Christmas Day – December 25

Major banks like Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Chase Bank will close all of their branches.

Transactions should not be scheduled for this day, and deposits will not be processed until the day after.

This will have a big impact on your money, as it means you will not be able to access things like safety deposit boxes.

You will also not be able to talk to a bank teller, so if you need to talk to one about a loan, you will not be able to.

Note that most ATMs should still be in use, however.

For those who have mortgage or rent payments scheduled for September 1, it should not be considered a late payment if it arrives on September 2.

Costco will close all of its warehouses for the day, but other stores like Walmart and Kroger will remain open as normal.
