It’s been nearly a decade since Red Hat notably deprecated Btrfs back in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.8 after it being a tech preview in earlier versions of RHEL. While upstream Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 remains on XFS and supporting the likes of Stratis Storage with LVM, AlmaLinux today announced that their AlmaLinux 10.1 release will support Btrfs.
AlmaLinux announced today that AlmaLinux 10.1 will support Btrfs file-system installations and is already supported in their AlmaLinux OS Kitten.
The AlmaLinux announcement applauds the advanced features of the copy-on-write file-system with its built-in volume management, transparent compression, snapshotting, and more. Btrfs isn’t going to be the default on AlmaLinux 10.1 but will be available via the custom partitioning page of the Anaconda installer.
More details on the Btrfs plans for AlmaLinux 10.1 can be found via their AlmaLinux.org announcement.
While AlmaLinux is a community downstream of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, they have demonstrated to deviate with some features/functionality such as continuing to support x86_64-v2 CPUs and restoring support for hardware deprecated by RHEL.
