AMAZON has announced that it is closing down one of its longest-running apps after 14 years.

And some users may be entitled to refunds as a result.

The online retail giant is pulling the plug on its own Appstore app for Android.

Amazon Appstore acted as a third party alternative to Google Play, with more than 500,000 apps.

It will continue to exist on Amazon Fire TVs and Amazon Fire tablets, where the platform is the main app store available.

Amazon Appstore has already been pulled from the Google Play Store.

But those who still have it installed on their phones and tablets will continue to have access until the summer.

“Starting August 20, 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device,” the firm said.

The move also means that Amazon Coins are being discontinued.

Amazon Coins are a virtual currency to buy apps and more.

Users can no longer buy them from today onwards but they can still spend any they have left.

Any coins remaining by August 20, when Amazon Appstore closes for good, will be refunded.

“Any Coins you have purchased that remain in your account after August 20, 2025 will be refunded,” the company explained.

“Additional details concerning refunds will be shared at a later date.”

Users seem unsurprised by the decision to end Amazon Appstore.

“Most of what they had was already available on Google Play,” one person wrote on Reddit.

“It is mediocre compared to Google Play,” another commented.

How to check if you have any Amazon Coins

You may have some forgotten Amazon Coins lurking on your account.

  1. Visit Amazon’s website and sign-in
  2. From the menu at the top with your name, find Your Apps & Devices
  3. Select Your Coins Account from the options in the navigation bar
