The next-generation Xbox is on track for a launch next year, according to the company in charge with powering the next major home games console. AMD CEO Lisa Su revealed that work on the custom processors that’ll do the donkey work for Microsoft’s next Xbox is going well.

“Development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC is progressing well to support a launch in 2027,” she said during the earnings call on Monday (via Engadget).

While speculation has seen 2027 mentioned as a potential release date for the Xbox Series X|S, this is the first we’ve heard from one of the major players about the release plans. However, just because AMD is confident that the system-on-a-chip will be ready for the launch, it doesn’t mean Microsoft will choose to release the system next year.

There are plenty of other considerations, namely the RAM shortage attributable to the AI boom. Microsoft may choose to wait until memory is more affordable and available rather than passing those costs onto consumers. A lot will also depend on the development of launch games and what Sony decides to do with its next-generation PlayStation. Recent reports say both may choose to delay releases for longer than expected.

The input from AMD is significant. In June last year, Microsoft and AMD announced the “strategic multi-year partnership” that would underpin the development of console, handheld, PC and accessories.

“Together with AMD, we’re advancing the state of art in gaming silicon to deliver the next generation of graphics innovation… enhanced with the power of AI, all while maintaining compatibility with your existing library of Xbox games,” said Xbox chief Sarah Bond.
