Android 16 will launch as early as Q2 of 2025
The recent Android 15 launch did not go well: the software was too late for Google’s latest smartphones, there are relatively few changes and other manufacturers take a long time to release their version of the operating system. The tech giant announces via a blog what 2025 will look like, including the launch of Android 16.
Android 16 (code name: Baklava) will be released next year a quarter earlier than normal (Q2 instead of Q3). Google hopes to complete the software in time for the launch of its own products. The Pixel 10 series is expected to launch in Q3. Hopefully, other manufacturers will also be able to run the latest software on their new smartphones more quickly by 2025.
In Q4, the manufacturer will launch another SDK update (Software Development Kit) with new features, but that update is not as big as Android 16 itself. In between the bigger launches, Google introduces the standard Feature Drops out, so in Q1 and Q3.
Google especially emphasizes how the new schedule is important for developers. They must adapt their apps to the new Android version. To help with that, Google is launching improvements to the Play Store. Providing feedback and recommendations will become easier for users and Gemini AI will also help better with writing, restructuring and documenting app source codes.
Remarkably, with the new schedule, Google is doing the opposite of what many users would want: fewer version updates, with several major innovations at a time. Instead, Google is opting to release Android 16 earlier, which – given the shorter time frame – may not be a huge update. We will wait patiently and keep you informed of all new developments.
