Netflix continues to release animated series adapted from cult video game sagas at a frenetic pace. Upcoming releases of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, Devil May Cry or Splinter Cell : Deathwatchall of which appeared at the last Geeked Week, are proof of this. The American SVOD giant also knows how to see the bigger picture and draw on iconic pop culture licenses.
In 2019, Netflix announced the arrival of an animated adaptation of the collectible card game Magic : The Gathering (Magic: The Gathering in French). Brothers Anthony and Joe Russo were set to direct the series, but eventually dropped out of the project before Jeff Kline, who was tapped to succeed them, did the same. Fans can rest assured that Netflix intends to deliver its adaptation of Magic : The Gathering.
Netflix is not abandoning its animated series Magic The Gathering
Netflix revealed at Geeked Week 2024 that it will start the adaptation of Magic : The Gatheringwhich has been at a standstill since 2021. After the Russo brothers and Jeff Kline, The role of showrunner for the Netflix, Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast project goes to Terry Matalas, known for his work on 12 Monkeys and seasons 2 and 3 of Star Trek : Picard.
He has also been named showrunner of the upcoming Disney+ series Vision. Terry Matalas should therefore not be bored in the coming months. This overloaded schedule does not seem to scare him, quite the contrary. He is expected to give a new creative direction to the animated adaptation.

« Those who discover this vast saga will learn what the millions of fans who play it every day already know. Magic is the ultimate narrative sandbox, filled with iconic and complex characters, extraordinary powers, and portals to every genre imaginable. It’s also a powerful reminder that no matter what culture, country, or plane of existence you come from, we can all come together and become heroes. “, rejoices Terry Matalas.
Netflix has not indicated a release window for the anime adaptation of Magic : The Gathering. Let’s hope for the fans that Terry Matalas doesn’t end up giving up the reins of production like his predecessors. Let’s remember that the first edition of the famous collectible card game was released in 1993.
This success has given rise to several video game and comic book adaptations, but no series. Magic has not been released to date. Suffice to say that the large community of fans of the license will be waiting for all the actors involved at the turning point.
