The small-budget drama that won big at this year’s Oscars is finally coming to streaming. Tomorrow, you can see for yourself just what captivated the Academy about Anora, with the movie being available to stream at home on Hulu.
Likened to a 21st-century update of the ’80s rom-com Pretty Woman, the dark fairy tale tells the story of a New York sex worker (played by Mikey Madison) who elopes with Vanya, the son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn). The pair quickly gets swept up in a whirlwind romance that sees them tie the knot in Las Vegas. Their marital bliss is short-lived, however, when the two newlyweds are met with the wrath of Vanya’s parents over the affair.
Nominated for six Oscars, the film collected an impressive five Academy Awards earlier this month, including Best Picture, Best Director for Sean Baker, Best Actress for Mikey Madison, Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay.
