Apple Intelligence has begun to be available on iPhones in the United States thanks to iOS 18.1. The deployment of functions is being very cautious on Apple’s part, but it seems that not even that has freed it from criticism. One such AI option is drawing notable criticism… and rightly so.
The AI that summarizes notifications. Among the AI features currently available is the ability to summarize iOS notifications. If an application sends us a series of notifications or if someone sends us several messages in a row, Apple Intelligence is capable of analyzing them and then summarizing them. The result, at least in theory, is a small message that conveys the essence of all those notifications.
Chaotic summaries. As indicated in The Verge, those who are sharing these condensed smart notifications are realizing that sometimes Apple Intelligence’s interpretation of these notifications may be wrong.
The problem is in the context. Apple’s AI model seems to have a particularly hard time when messages, emails, or Slack notifications are vague in details or context, something that is common in those everyday conversations in which humans are able to easily interpret what someone means. although it doesn’t say it clearly.
Examples everywhere. Users of platforms such as Reddit, Threads or X (Twitter) have shared screenshots of these Apple AI notifications. In them, for example, a mother tripped on a walk and sent a message to her son, which was interpreted as meaning that she had committed suicide. Another in which several notifications from an exterior camera in a home were brought together indicated that there were 10 people at the entrance (when they had simply passed by there at different times).
Others take it with humor. Although the results may be confusing, for some users these summaries are almost entertaining. The way Apple Intelligence summarizes and tries to understand messages can often have an almost comical tone.
The idea is not bad, the implementation has room for improvement. Taking into account that many users receive a large number of notifications, Apple’s proposal will end up improving its operation more and more and behaving better and better. It is already useful in its current implementation in which it is capable of summarizing, for example, series of notifications. the same app, and it simply needs to be able to better recognize the context of messages and emails to end up being even more powerful.
In Spain and the EU we will still have to wait. The notification summary, like the rest of Apple Intelligence options, is not currently available in Spain or the European Union. It will be next April, and that will be when we can access this feature on Apple phones. If we have a Mac, yes, we can now try some of these functions (but not the notification summary) in our country.
