Apple Intelligence’s future, iPhone 17 rumors, and more on the AppleInsider Podcast

Tim Cook (right) and Craig Federighi have reassured staff that Apple would lead in AI

A fifth developer beta is out for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, while the new iPhone 17 launch date has leaked, and Apple tells its staff it’s serious about AI, on the AppleInsider Podcast.

With its fifth developer beta — and the public betas now in full swing too — Apple is refining iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe. But those refinements seem to include going back and forth on some elements of its new Liquid Glass design, while in the case of the camera app, there is definite capitulation to complainers.

There continue to be plenty of complainers about Apple Intelligence, too, but this week Apple held a rare company meeting that saw Tim Cook making some encouraging points about the company and the future of AI. And Perplexity demonstrated why Apple’s stance on privacy is not binding its hands, it’s going to make Apple Intelligence the leader in AI. Eventually.

Also this week, it was time for the first leak of when exactly the new iPhone launch would take place — and the leak — well, more common sense guess-work really — arrived right on schedule. There were no surprises, but still we’re now looking at only a sliver over 30 days before all of the rumors will be proven right or wrong.

We’ve then got two or three days more to get our bank accounts ready and assure accountants and partners that the iPhone 17 Pro Max is a necessary purchase. Although we might want to wait on that until we see whether tariffs have forced a price hike, and that’s still possible despite all of this week’s political and economic news.

BONUS: Subscribe via Patreon or Apple Podcasts to hear AppleInsider+, the extended edition. This time, Apple is facing pressures from rivals and from governments around the world, and the way it’s handling all of it is sometimes rather less than impressive.
