Apple has launched its first ever public beta for AirPods firmware, bringing forthcoming iOS 26 features to AirPods users ahead of their fall launch. Here’s everything new.
Apple debuts first ever public beta for AirPods firmware

AirPods beta firmware has historically been difficult to install. That changed this summer, when the developer beta became easier to get than ever.
And now, for the first time, Apple has launched an AirPods firmware public beta too.
You can visit beta.apple.com to enroll in Apple’s Beta Software Program for AirPods.
Currently, beta firmware is only available for the following models:
This limitation is likely because the majority of new features require an H2 chip, which is exclusive to these models.
When Apple ships iOS 26 in a wide release this fall, all AirPods users are expected to benefit from new firmware. However, certain features will still be limited to select models.
New features in AirPods beta firmware

Today’s AirPods firmware public beta includes support for five new iOS 26 features:
- Automatic pausing when you fall asleep
- Studio-quality audio recording
- Camera remote
- Automatic switching for CarPlay
- Enhanced voice quality on calls
Several of these features can be configured within the Settings app after the beta is installed.
For example, sleep detection can be enabled or disabled from AirPods’ settings. Camera remote, similarly, has options to change the actions that are triggered by pressing your AirPods’ stems.
Here’s Apple’s description of some of the new features:
Updates to audio recording enable creators to record studio-quality vocals on the go, and start or stop video recordings from a distance with a simple press of the AirPods stem. Building on the benefits of Voice Isolation, AirPods users will also enjoy even clearer calls with enhanced voice quality.
While the AirPods firmware public beta does provide advance access to several upcoming features, it also might introduce new bugs and performance issues for your AirPods, just like any other pre-release software. If you’re unwilling to encounter potential issues with your AirPods, I’d recommend holding off for the public launch this fall.
